Abstract

Online education has witnessed a spike during the COVID-19 pandemic[1], due to which it is important to be performance efficient and serve the content in a reasonable time. In this case study of Virtual Labs, an e-learning platform we analyse and propose a set of approaches which helps in improving the website’s performance. Virtual Labs is an e-learning website for virtual experiments in topics on science and engineering. These experiments are in the form of static webpages. This paper delineates the steps we followed to improve the performance of the static e-learning website. It shares insights into some of the concepts which can help improve the website performance.

Abstract

Multi-target tracking of pedestrians is a challenging task due to uncertainty about targets, caused mainly by similarity between pedestrians, occlusion over a relatively long time and a cluttered background. A usual scheme for tackling multi-target tracking is to divide it into two sub-problems: data association and trajectory estimation. A reasonable approach is based on joint optimization of a discrete model for data association and a continuous model for trajectory estimation in a Markov Random Field framework. Nonetheless, usual solutions of the data association problem are based only on location information, while the visual information in the images is ignored. Visual features can be useful for associating detections with true targets more reliably, because the targets usually have discriminative features. Abstract

We aim to solve the highly challenging task of generating continuous sign language videos solely from speech segments for the first time. Recent efforts in this space have focused on generating such videos from human-annotated text transcripts without considering other modalities. However, replacing speech with sign language proves to be a practical solution while communicating with people suffering from hearing loss. Therefore, we eliminate the need of using text as input and design techniques that work for more natural, continuous, freely uttered speech covering an extensive vocabulary. Since the current datasets are inadequate for generating sign language directly from speech, we collect and release the first Indian sign language dataset comprising speech-level annotations, text transcripts, and the corresponding sign-language videos. Next, we propose a multi-tasking transformer network trained to generate signer's poses from speech segments. With speech-to-text as an auxiliary task and an additional cross-modal discriminator, our model learns to generate continuous sign pose sequences in an end-to-end manner. Extensive experiments and comparisons with other baselines demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We also conduct additional ablation studies to analyze the effect of different modules of our network. A demo video containing several results is attached to the supplementary material.

Abstract

In this paper, we present the first method to analytically compute shading and soft shadows for physically based BRDFs from arbitrary area lights. We observe that for a given shading point, shadowed radiance can be computed by analytically integrating over the visible portion of the light source using Linearly Transformed Cosines (LTCs). We present a structured approach to project, re-order and horizon-clip spherical polygons of arbitrary lights and occluders. The visible portion is then computed by multiple repetitive set difference operations. Our method produces noise-free shading and soft-shadows and outperforms raytracing within the same compute budget. We further optimize our algorithm for convex light and occluder meshes by projecting the silhouette edges as viewed from the shading point to a spherical polygon, and performing one set difference operation thereby achieving a speedup of more than 2× …

Abstract

3D human body reconstruction from monocular images is an interesting and ill-posed problem in computer vision with wider applications in multiple domains. In this paper, we propose SHARP, a novel end-to-end trainable network that accurately recovers the detailed geometry and appearance of 3D people in loose clothing from a monocular image. We propose a sparse and efficient fusion of a parametric body prior with a non-parametric peeled depth map representation of clothed models. The parametric body prior constrains our model in two ways: first, the network retains geometrically consistent body parts that are not occluded by clothing, and second, it provides a body shape context that improves prediction of the peeled depth maps. This enables SHARP to recover fine-grained 3D geometrical details with just L1 losses on the 2D maps, given an input image. Abstract

We introduce SynSE, a novel syntactically guided generative approach for Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL). Our end-to-end approach learns progressively refined generative embedding spaces constrained within and across the involved modalities (visual, language). The inter-modal constraints are defined between action sequence embedding and embeddings of Parts of Speech (PoS) tagged words in the corresponding action description. We deploy SynSE for the task of skeleton-based action sequence recognition. Our design choices enable SynSE to generalize compositionally, i.e., recognize sequences whose action descriptions contain words not encountered during training. We also extend our approach to the more challenging Generalized Zero-Shot Learning (GZSL) problem via a confidence-based gating mechanism. We are the first to present zero-shot skeleton action recognition results on the large-scale NTU-60 and NTU-120 skeleton action datasets with multiple splits. Our results demonstrate SynSE's state of the art performance in both ZSL and GZSL settings compared to strong baselines on the NTU-60 and NTU-120 datasets.

Abstract

The lack of fine-grained joints such as hand fingers is a fundamental performance bottleneck for state of the art skeleton action recognition models trained on the largest action recognition dataset, NTU-RGBD. To address this bottleneck, we introduce a new skeleton based human action dataset - NTU60-X. In addition to the 25 body joints for each skeleton as in NTU-RGBD, NTU60-X dataset includes finger and facial joints, enabling a richer skeleton representation. We appropriately modify the state of the art approaches to enable training using the introduced dataset. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of NTU60-X in overcoming the aforementioned bottleneck and improve state of the art performance, overall and on hitherto worst performing action categories.

Abstract

Given a monocular color image of a warehouse rack, we aim to predict the bird’s-eye view layout for each shelf in the rack, which we term as ‘multi-layer’ layout prediction. To this end, we present RackLay, a deep neural network for real-time shelf layout estimation from a single image. Unlike previous layout estimation methods which provide a single layout for the dominant ground plane alone, RackLay estimates the top-view and front-view layout for each shelf in the considered rack populated with objects. RackLay’s architecture and its variants are versatile and estimate accurate layouts for diverse scenes characterized by varying number of visible shelves in an image, large range in shelf occupancy factor and varied background clutter. Given the extreme paucity of datasets in this space and the difficulty involved in acquiring real data from warehouses, we additionally release a flexible synthetic dataset generation pipeline WareSynth which allows users to control the generation process and tailor the dataset according to contingent application. The ablations across architectural variants and comparison with strong prior baselines vindicate the efficacy of RackLay as an apt architecture for the novel problem of multi-layered layout estimation. We also show that fusing the top-view and front-view enables 3D reasoning applications such as metric free space estimation for the considered rack.

Abstract

Typical fingerprint recognition systems are comprised of a spoof detection module and a subsequent recognition module, running one after the other. In this paper, we reformulate the workings of a typical fingerprint recognition system. In particular, we posit that both spoof detection and fingerprint recognition are correlated tasks. Therefore, rather than performing the two tasks separately, we propose a joint model for spoof detection and matching to simultaneously perform both tasks without compromising the accuracy of either task. We demonstrate the capability of our joint model to obtain an authentication accuracy (1:1 matching) of TAR = 100% @ FAR = 0.1% on the FVC 2006 DB2A dataset while achieving a spoof detection ACE of 1.44% on the LiveDet 2015 dataset, both maintaining the performance of stand-alone methods. In practice, this reduces the time and memory requirements of the fingerprint recognition system by 50% and 40%, respectively; a significant advantage for recognition systems running on resource-constrained devices and communication channels.

Abstract

Synthesis of long-term human motion skeleton sequences is essential to aid human-centric video generation with potential applications in Augmented Reality, 3D character animations, pedestrian trajectory prediction, etc. Long-term human motion synthesis is a challenging task due to multiple factors like, long-term temporal dependencies among poses, cyclic repetition across poses, bi-directional and multi-scale dependencies among poses, variable speed of actions, and a large as well as partially overlapping space of temporal pose variations across multiple class/types of human activities. This paper aims to address these challenges to synthesize a long-term (> 6000 ms) human motion trajectory across a large variety of human activity classes (> 50). We propose a two-stage activity generation method to achieve this goal, where the first stage deals with learning the long-term global pose dependencies in activity sequences by learning to synthesize a sparse motion trajectory while the second stage addresses the generation of dense motion trajectories taking the output of the first stage. We demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over SOTA methods using various quantitative evaluation metrics on publicly available datasets.
