Abstract

Manual identification of ECG heart-beat classes by cardiologists is time consuming and cumbersome. These professionals rely on computer based methods for determination of these heart-disease types. In this work, existing literature is organized into a proposed taxonomy based on dichotomies involving full time series-based versus feature-based, AAMI versus Non-AAMI, and inter-patient versus intra-patient based distinctions. The basic contributions of this work are systematic review of literature on heart-beat abnormality detection, identifying research gaps and the research issues unmet sofar in the literature to propose novel approaches for addressing these gaps.

Abstract

Executing a robust person-following behaviour is a crucial task for service robots. This requires real-time tracking of the target person and maintaining it in its field of view (FOV) as long as possible while also keeping a safe distance without collision. Such a robot has to autonomously traverse long corridors, bend around corners, curve around an obstacle and join the person back, or even wait them out. Thus, in an unknown urban setting, with other agents and service robots, dynamic target tracking and obstacle avoidance becomes a challenging task for autonomous non-holonomic robots. Model Predictive Control (MPC) has the ability to incorporate future predictions. vehicle kinematics, and non-linearity of constraints while still being reasonably fast for slow and medium walking speeds of a human being. Thus, by solving a single non-linear MPC we can track the unknown dynamic trajectory of a person in real-time, and avoid undesirable proximity. In this paper, a constrained MPC framework is designed that meets the above conditions gracefully. The person-following robot (PFR) is able to track a moving target in a simulated environment. With an adequate upper margin of 20Hz, the MPC sends velocity commands for a collision-free trajectory among an increasing number of obstacles in its perceived periphery. In an incremental fashion, it is also able to adapt to varying walking behaviour, that is, types of trajectories and walking speed.

Abstract

Significant advances have been made recently in Visual Place Recognition (VPR), feature correspondence, and localization due to the proliferation of deep-learning-based methods. However, existing approaches tend to address, partially or fully, only one of two key challenges: viewpoint change and perceptual aliasing. In this paper, we present novel research that simultaneously addresses both challenges by combining deep-learned features with geometric transformations based on reasonable domain assumptions about navigation on a ground-plane, whilst also removing the requirement for specialized hardware setup (eg lighting, downwards facing cameras). In particular, our integration of VPR with SLAM by leveraging the robustness of deep-learned features and our homography-based extreme viewpoint invariance significantly boosts the performance of VPR, feature correspondence, and pose graph submodules of the SLAM pipeline. For the first time, we demonstrate a localization system capable of state-of-the-art performance despite perceptual aliasing and extreme 180-degree-rotated viewpoint change in a range of real-world and simulated experiments. Our system is able to achieve early loop closures that prevent significant drifts in SLAM trajectories. We also compare extensively several deep architectures for VPR and descriptor matching. We also show that superior place recognition and descriptor matching across opposite views results in a similar performance gain in back-end pose graph optimization.

Abstract

Music, an integral part of our lives, which is not only a source of entertainment but plays an important role in mental well-being by impacting moods, emotions and other affective states. Music preferences and listening strategies have been shown to be associated with the psychological well-being of listeners including internalized symptomatology and depression. However, till date no studies exist that examine time-varying music consumption, in terms of acoustic content, and its association with users' well-being. In the current study, we aim at unearthing static and dynamic patterns prevalent in active listening behavior of individuals which may be used as indicators of risk for depression. Mental well-being scores and listening histories of 541 this http URL users were examined. Static and dynamic acoustic and emotion-related features were extracted from each user's listening history and correlated with their mental well-being scores. Results revealed that individuals with greater depression risk resort to higher dependency on music with greater repetitiveness in their listening activity. Furthermore, the affinity of depressed individuals towards music that can be perceived as sad was found to be resistant to change over time. This study has large implications for future work in the area of assessing mental illness risk by exploiting digital footprints of users via online music streaming platforms.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a simple baseline for visual grounding for autonomous driving which outperforms the state of the art methods, while retaining minimal design choices. Our framework minimizes the cross-entropy loss over the cosine distance between multiple image ROI features with a text embedding (representing the given sentence/phrase). We use pre-trained networks for obtaining the initial embeddings and learn a transformation layer on top of the text embedding. We perform experiments on the Talk2Car dataset and achieve 68.7% AP50 accuracy, improving upon the previous state of the art by 8.6%. Our investigation suggests reconsideration towards more approaches employing sophisticated attention mechanisms or multi-stage reasoning or complex metric learning loss functions by showing promise in simpler alternatives.

Abstract

Recent neuroimaging evidence suggest that there exists a unique individual-specific functional connectivity (FC) pattern consistent across tasks. The objective of our study is to utilize FC patterns to identify an individual using a supervised machine learning approach. To this end, we use two previously published data sets that comprises resting-state and task-based fMRI responses. We use static FC measures as input to a linear classifier to evaluate its performance. We additionally extend this analysis to capture dynamic FC using two approaches: the common sliding window approach and the more recent phase synchrony-based measure. We found that the classification models using dynamic FC patterns as input outperform their static analysis counterpart by a significant margin for both data sets. Keeping time is fundamental for our everyday existence. Various isochronous activities, such as locomotion, require us to use internal timekeeping. This phenomenon comes into play also in other human pursuits such as dance and music. When listening to music, we spontaneously perceive and predict its beat. The process of beat perception comprises both beat inference and beat maintenance, their relative importance depending on the salience of beat in the music. To study functional connectivity associated with these processes in a naturalistic situation, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain responses of participants while they were listening to a piece of music containing strong contrasts in beat salience. Abstract

The ever-growing need for surveillance over various geographical locations has necessitated the development of novel monitoring approaches. While drones are still considered the most suitable aerial surveillance equipment, new techniques based on use of kites such as kite aerial photography (KAP) are becoming popular. This paper deals with one such novel approach, termed as KiteCam, which provides a low-cost and versatile method of performing local aerial surveillance for a prolonged period. The camera, processor, battery and power management module have been designed and fabricated such that the total weight of the system is approximately 42 grams. Hence, the system is light enough to be carried by most kites under normal weather conditions, thus offering a wide variety of applications with minimal energy consumption and concealed surveillance options. The test flights have been successfully conducted and observed in terms of stability and duration. The images obtained from the flight tests have been analyzed and verified for consistency and clarity. Finally, some modifications have also been mentioned regarding the future generations of the device.

Musical preferences have been considered a mirror of the self. In this age of Big Data, online music streaming services allow us to capture ecologically valid music listening behavior and provide a rich source of information to identify several user-specific aspects. Studies have shown musical engagement to be an indirect representation of internal states including internalized symptomatology and depression. The current study aims at unearthing patterns and trends in the individuals at risk for depression as it manifests in naturally occurring music listening behavior. Mental well-being scores, musical engagement measures, and listening histories of this http URL users (N= 541) were acquired. Social tags associated with each listener's most popular tracks were analyzed to unearth the mood/emotions and genres associated with the users. Results revealed that social tags prevalent in the users at risk for depression were predominantly related to emotions depicting Sadness associated with genre tags representing neo-psychedelic-, avant garde-, dream-pop. This study will open up avenues for an MIR-based approach to characterizing and predicting risk for depression which can be helpful in early detection and additionally provide bases for designing music recommendations accordingly.

Abstract

As the field of Music Information Retrieval grows, it is important to take into consideration the multi-modality of music and how aspects of musical engagement such as movement and gesture might be taken into account. Bodily movement is universally associated with music and reflective of important individual features related to music preference such as personality, mood, and empathy. Future multimodal MIR systems may benefit from taking these aspects into account. The current study addresses this by identifying individual differences, specifically Big Five personality traits, and scores on the Empathy and Systemizing Quotients (EQ/SQ) from participants' free dance movements. Our model successfully explored the unseen space for personality as well as EQ, SQ, which has not previously been accomplished for the latter. R2 scores for personality, EQ, and SQ were 76.3%, 77.1%, and 86.7% respectively. As a follow-up, we investigated which bodily joints were most important in defining these traits. We discuss how further research may explore how the mapping of these traits to movement patterns can be used to build a more personalized, multi-modal recommendation system, as well as potential therapeutic applications.
