Abstract

Although several automatic itinerary generation services have made travel planning easy, often times travellers find themselves in unique situations where they cannot make the best out of their trip. Visitors differ in terms of many factors such as suffering from a disability, being of a particular dietary preference, travelling with a toddler, etc. While most tourist spots are universal, others may not be inclusive for all. In this paper, we focus on the problem of mining inclusion and exclusion phrases associated with 11 such factors, from reviews related to a tourist spot. While existing work on tourism data mining mainly focuses on structured extraction of trip related information, personalized sentiment analysis, and automatic itinerary generation, to the best of our knowledge this is the first work on inclusion/exclusion phrase mining from tourism reviews. Using a dataset of 2000 reviews related to 1000 tourist spots, our broad level classifier provides a binary overlap F1 of 80 and 82 to classify a phrase as inclusion or exclusion respectively. Further, our inclusion/exclusion classifier provides an F1 of 98 and 97 for 11-class inclusion and exclusion classification respectively. We believe that our work can significantly improve the quality of an automatic itinerary generation service.

Abstract

WikiHow is an open-domain repository of in- structional articles for a variety of tasks, which can be revised by users. In this paper, we extract pairwise versions of an instruction be- fore and after a revision was made. Starting from a noisy dataset of revision histories, we specifically extract and analyze edits that in- volve cases of vagueness in instructions. We further investigate the ability of a neural model to distinguish between two versions of an in- struction in our data by adopting a pairwise ranking task from previous work and showing improvements over existing baselines

Abstract

PySyft is an open-source multi-language library enabling secure and private machine learning by wrapping and extending popular deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch in a transparent, lightweight, and user-friendly manner. Its aim is to both help popularize privacy-preserving techniques in machine learning by making them as accessible as possible via Python bindings and common tools familiar to researchers and data scientists, as well as to be extensible such that new Federated Learning (FL), Multi-Party Computation, or Differential Privacy methods can be flexibly and simply implemented and integrated. This chapter will introduce the methods available within the PySyft library and describe their implementations. We will then provide a proof-of-concept demonstration of a FL workflow using an example of how to train a convolutional neural network. Next, we review the use of PySyft in academic literature to date and discuss future use-cases and development plans. Most importantly, we introduce Duet: our tool for easier FL for scientists and data owners.

Abstract

The paper presents a sub-nW BJT based temperature sensor for ultra-low power microsystems. The sensor is based on amplifying the difference between base-emitter voltages of BJTs using gate-leakage transistors. Implemented in UMC 65nm technology, the sensor occupies an area of 0.005mm 2 . It achieves a maximum non-linearity error of 0.12 o C(3σ) over the temperature range of - 55 o C to 80 o C. Without any trimming, a worst case inaccuracy of +0.36 o C/ - 1.61 o C is observed w.r.t process variations, depicting the process-invariant nature of the temperature sensor. It also achieves a low supply sensitivity of 0.56 o C/V over a wide supply range of 0.7V-3V. The power consumption of the sensor is 419pW at 27 o C and 0.7V supply.

Abstract

Earthquake Resistant Design Philosophy seeks (a) no damage, (b) no significant structural damage, and (c) significant structural damage but no collapse of normal buildings, under minor, moderate and severe levels of earthquake shaking, respectively. A procedure is proposed for seismic design of low-rise reinforced concrete special moment frame buildings, which is consistent with this philosophy; buildings are designed to be ductile through appropriate sizing and reinforcement detailing, such that they resist severe level of earthquake shaking without collapse. Nonlinear analyses of study buildings are used to determine quantitatively (a) ranges of design parameters required to assure the required deformability in normal buildings to resist the severe level of earthquake shaking, (b) four specific limit states that represent the start of different structural damage states, and (c) levels of minor and moderate earthquake shakings stated in the philosophy along with an extreme level of earthquake shaking associated with the structural damage state of no collapse. The four limits of structural damage states and the three levels of earthquake shaking identified are shown to be consistent with the performance-based design guidelines available in literature. Finally, nonlinear analyses results are used to confirm the efficacy of the proposed procedure.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider a cellular-based Internet of things (IoT) network consisting of IoT devices that can communicate directly with each other in a device-to-device (D2D) fashion as well as send real-time status updates about some underlying physical processes observed by them. We assume that such real-time applications are supported by cellular networks where cellular base stations (BSs) collect status updates over time from a subset of the IoT devices in their vicinity. We characterize two performance metrics: i) the network throughput which quantifies the performance of D2D communications, and ii) the Age of Information which quantifies the performance of the real-time IoT-enabled applications. Concrete analytical results are derived using stochastic geometry by modeling the locations of IoT devices as a bipolar Poisson Point Process (PPP) and that of the BSs as another Independent PPP. Our results provide useful design guidelines on the efficient deployment of future IoT networks that will jointly support D2D communications and several cellular network-enabled real-time applications.

Abstract

Social media platforms have democratized the publication process resulting into easy and viral propagation of information. However, spread of rumors via such media often results into undesired and extremely impactful political, economic, social, psychological and criminal consequences. Several manual as well as automated efforts have been undertaken in the past to solve this critical problem. Existing automated methods are text based, user credibility based or use signals from the tweet propagation tree. We aim at using the text, user, propagation tree and temporal information jointly for rumor detection on Twitter. This involves several challenges like how to handle text variations on Twitter, what signals from user profile could be useful, how to best encode the propagation tree information, and how to incorporate the temporal signal. Our novel architecture, (Text and Temporal Tree Network), leverages deep learning based architectures to encode text, user and tree information in a temporal-aware manner. Our extensive comparisons show that our proposed methods outperform the state-of-the-art techniques by 7 and 6% points respectively on two popular benchmark datasets, and also lead to better early detection results.

Abstract

Opinion spam on online restaurant review sites are a major problem as the reviews influence the users’ choice to visit or not to a restaurant. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting genuine and fake reviews in restaurant online reviews. We propose a fake review detection technique comprising data preprocessing, detection and ensemble learning that learns the reviews and their features to filter out the fake reviews. Initially, we preprocess to obtain the refined reviews and employ two independent classifiers using deep machine learning and feature-based machine learning techniques for detection. These classifiers tackle the problem in two aspects, i.e., the deep machine learning model learns the word distributions and the feature-based machine learning model extracts the relevant features from the reviews. Finally, a hybrid ensemble model from the two classifiers are built to detect the genuine and fake reviews. The experimental analysis of the proposed approach on Yelp datasets outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract

This paper presents a bio-inspired intelligent controller to enhance the performance of a nonlinear system. The controller is designed by capturing the emotional intelligence of mammalian brain mediated by the limbic system in which certain parts are responsible for generating emotions and these can be combined together as brain affective system inspired control architecture (BASIC). This controller has been used to cope with nonlinearities present in control applications. In this paper brain inspired control architecture is proposed while incorporating the sensory cortex explicitly in the architecture and the computational equations of various modules are suitably developed. The performance of the proposed controller is analyzed on a typical nonlinear system, namely, Permanent magnet synchronous motor for speed control, harmonics in stator phase currents and ripples produced in electromagnetic torque at different operating conditions. Its performance is compared with the existing control techniques in offline simulations as well as in real-time Hardware-in-loop environment. The results establish the computational efficiency, accuracy and robustness of the proposed controller.

Abstract

Fraudulent jobs are an emerging threat over online recruitment platforms such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor. Fraudulent job postings affect the platform’s trustworthiness and have a negative impact on user experience. Therefore, these platforms need to detect and remove these fraudulent jobs. Generally, fraudulent job postings contain untenable facts about domain-specific entities such as mismatch in skills, industries, offered compensation, etc. However, existing approaches focus on studying writing styles, linguistics, and context-based features, and ignore the relationships among domain-specific entities. To bridge this gap, we propose an approach based on the Knowledge Graph (KG) of domain-specific entities to detect fraudulent jobs. In this paper, we present a multi-tier novel end-to-end framework called FRaudulent Jobs Detection (FRJD) Engine, which considers a) fact validation module using KGs, b) contextual module using deep neural networks c) meta-data module to capture the semantics of job postings. We conduct our experiments using a fact validation dataset containing 4 million facts extracted from job postings. Extensive evaluation shows that FRJD yields a 0.96 F1-score on the curated dataset of 157,880 job postings.
