Abstract

The ILSUM shared task focuses on text summarization for two major Indian languages- Hindi and Gujarati, along with English. In this task, we experiment with various pretrained sequence-to-sequence models to find out the best model for each of the languages. We present a detailed overview of the models and our approaches in this paper. We secure the first rank across all three sub-tasks (English, Hindi and Gujarati). This paper also extensively analyzes the impact of k-fold cross-validation while experimenting with limited data size, and we also perform various experiments with a combination of the original and a filtered version of the data to determine the efficacy of the pretrained models.

Abstract

We consider the standard broadcast setup with a single server broadcasting information to a number of clients, each of which contains local storage (called cache) of some size, which can store some parts of the available files at the server. The centralized coded caching framework, consists of a caching phase and a delivery phase, both of which are carefully designed in order to use the cache and the channel together optimally. In prior literature, various combinatorial structures have been used to construct coded caching schemes. One of the chief drawbacks of many of these existing constructions is the large subpacketization level, which denotes the number of times a file should be split for the schemes to provide coding gain. In this work, using a new binary matrix model, we present several novel constructions for coded caching based on the various types of combinatorial designs and their q-analogs, which are also called subspace designs. While most of the schemes constructed in this work (based on existing designs) have a high cache requirement, they provide a rate that is either constant or decreasing, and moreover require competitively small levels of subpacketization, which is an extremely important feature in practical applications of coded caching. We also apply our constructions to the distributed computing framework of MapReduce, which consists of three phases, the Map phase, the Shuffle phase and the Reduce phase. Using our binary matrix framework, we present a new simple generic coded data shuffling scheme. Employing our designs-based constructions in conjunction with this new shuffling scheme, we obtain new coded computing schemes which have low file complexity, with marginally higher communication load compared to the optimal scheme for equivalent parameters. We show that our schemes can neatly extend to the scenario with full and partial stragglers also.

Abstract

We say that two given polynomials f, g ∈ R[x_1, ..., x_n], over a ring R, are equivalent under shifts if there exists a vector (a_1, ..., a_n) ∈ Rⁿ such that f(x_1+a_1, ..., x_n+a_n) = g(x_1, ..., x_n). This is a special variant of the polynomial projection problem in Algebraic Complexity Theory. Grigoriev and Karpinski (FOCS 1990), Lakshman and Saunders (SIAM J. Computing, 1995), and Grigoriev and Lakshman (ISSAC 1995) studied the problem of testing polynomial equivalence of a given polynomial to any t-sparse polynomial, over the rational numbers, and gave exponential time algorithms. In this paper, we provide hardness results for this problem. Formally, for a ring R, let SparseShift_R be the following decision problem - Given a polynomial P(X), is there a vector 𝐚 such that P(X+𝐚) contains fewer monomials than P(X). We show that SparseShift_R is at least as hard as checking if a given system of polynomial equations over R[x_1,..., x_n] has a solution (Hilbert’s Nullstellensatz). As a consequence of this reduction, we get the following results. 1) SparseShift_ℤ is undecidable. 2) For any ring R (which is not a field) such that HN_R is NP_R-complete over the Blum-Shub-Smale model of computation, SparseShift_ is also NP_R-complete. In particular, SparseShift_ℤ is also NP_ℤ-complete. We also study the gap version of the SparseShift_R and show the following. 1) For every function β:ℕ → ℝ_+ such that β ∈ o(1), N^β-gap-SparseShift_ℤ is also undecidable (where N is the input length). 2) For R = 𝔽_p, ℚ, ℝ or ℤ_q and for every β > 1 the β-gap-SparseShift_R problem is NP-hard. Furthermore, there exists a constant α > 1 such that for every d = O(1) in the sparse representation model, and for every d ≤ n^O(1) in the arithmetic circuit model, the α^d-gap-SparseShift_R problem is NP-hard when given polynomials of degree at most d, in O(nd) many variables, as input.

Abstract

Writing a good job description is an important step in the online recruitment process to hire the best candidates. Most recruiters forget to include some relevant skills in the job description. These missing skills affect the performance of recruitment tasks such as job suggestions, job search, candidate recommendations, etc. Existing approaches are limited to contextual modelling, do not exploit inter-relational structures like job-job and job-skill relationships, and are not scalable. In this paper, we exploit these structural relationships using a graph-based approach. We propose a novel skill prediction framework called JobXMLC, which uses graph neural networks with skill attention to predict missing skills using job descriptions. JobXMLC enables joint learning over a job-skill graph consisting of 22.8K entities (jobs and skills) and 650K relationships. We experiment with real-world recruitment datasets to evaluate our proposed approach. We train JobXMLC on 20, 298 jobs and 2, 548 skills within 30 minutes on a single GPU machine. JobXMLC outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches by 6% on precision and 3% on recall. JobXMLC is 18X faster for training tasks and up to 634X faster in skill prediction on benchmark datasets enabling JobXMLC to scale up on larger datasets. Abstract

Vital gene expressions form the basis for the detection of malaria infection levels. Quantification of infected erythrocytes and classification of their life cycle stages are done at a macroscopic level by experts, for making informed decisions for diagnosis and treatment of malaria. Of late multiple computational approaches have been proposed to circumvent the problem of dimensionality leading to accurately predicted results. In this work, a dimensionality reduction technique based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to Plasmodium falciparum single cell transcriptomics to arrive at an optimized subset of features from the larger dataset. Features are chosen based on their class variants considering increased efficiency and accuracy, to separately transform the selected elements into a lower dimension. For the classification of the life cycle of malaria parasites based on single cell transcriptome data, a three-pronged approach employing the multiclass Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), and Random Forest (RF) technique is used. Further, we constructed protein interaction networks of the genes identified by the feature selection method and gene ontology analysis elucidated the role of the proteins in the progression of the parasite through its life cycle. Our approach presents a novel protocol to implement ML techniques on scRNA seq datasets and subsequently harness the extracted information for biomarker/drug target detection.

Abstract

Employment scams, such as scapegoat positions, clickbait and non-existing jobs, etc., are among the top five scams registered over online platforms.1 Generally, scam complaints contain heterogeneous information (money, location, employment type, organization, email, and phone number), which can provide critical insights for appropriate interventions to avoid scams. Despite substantial efforts to analyze employment scams, integrating relevant scam-related information in structured form remains unexplored. In this work, we extract this information and construct a large-scale Employment Scam Knowledge Graph consisting of 0.1M entities and 0.2M relationships. Our findings include discovering different modes of employment scams, entities, and relationships among entities to alert job seekers. We plan to extend this work by utilizing a knowledge graph to identify and avoid potential scams in the future

Abstract

Suspect Identification is one of the most pivotal aspects of a forensic and criminal investigation. A significant amount of time and skill is devoted to creating sketches for it and requires a fair amount of recollections from the witness to provide a useful sketch. We devise a method that aims to automate the process of suspect identification and model this problem by iteratively retrieving images from feedback provided by the user. Compared to standard image retrieval tasks, interactive facial image retrieval is specifically more challenging due to the high subjectivity involved in describing a person’s facial attributes and appropriately evolving with the preferences put forward by the user. Our method uses a relatively simpler form of supervision by utilizing the user’s feedback to label images as either similar or dissimilar to their mental image of the suspect based on which we propose a loss function using the contrastive learning paradigm that is optimized in an online fashion. We validate the efficacy of our proposed approach using a carefully designed testbed to simulate user feedback and a large-scale user study. We empirically show that our method iteratively improves personalization, leading to faster convergence and enhanced recommendation relevance, thereby, improving user satisfaction. Our proposed framework is being designed for real-time use in the metropolitan crime investigation department, and thus is also equipped with a user-friendly web interface with a real-time experience for suspect retrieval.

Abstract

No direct experimental constraints exist on Leptoquark (LQ) couplings with quarks and right-handed neutrinos (RHNs). If a LQ dominantly couples to RHNs, it can leave unique signatures at the LHC. The RHNs can be produced copiously from LQ decays as long as they are lighter than the LQs. LQ-induced RHN production has never been searched for in experiments. This channel can act as a simultaneous probe for RHNs and LQs that dominantly couple to RHNs. In this paper, we consider all possible charge-2/3 and 1/3 scalar and vector LQs that dominantly couple to second-generation quarks and RHN. We study the pair and single productions of TeV-scale LQs and their subsequent decay to sub-TeV RHNs, realised in the inverse seesaw framework. We also consider RHN pair production through a t-channel LQ exchange. The single LQ production and t-channel contributions can be significant for large LQ-RHN-quark couplings. We systematically combine events from these processes leading to a pair of RHNs plus jets to study the prospects of LQ-assisted RHN pair production. We analyse the monolepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states and estimate the discovery reach at the high-luminosity LHC

Abstract

Coronavirus, a zoonotic virus capable of transmitting infections from animals to humans, emerged as a pandemic recently. In such circumstances, it is essential to understand the virus’s origin. In this study, we present a novel machine-learning pipeline PreHost for host prediction of the family, Coronaviridae. We leverage the complete viral genome and sequences at the protein level (spike protein, membrane protein, and nucleocapsid protein). Compared with the current state-of-the-art approaches, the random forest model attained high accuracy and recall scores of 99.91% and 0.98, respectively, for genome sequences. In addition to the spike protein sequences, our study shows membrane and nucleocapsid protein sequences can be utilized to predict the host of viruses. We also identified important sites in the viral sequences that help distinguish between different host classes. The host prediction pipeline PreHost will cater as a valuable tool to take effective measures to govern the transmission of future viruses.

Abstract

Herein, a new type of carbodicarbene (CDC) comprising two different classes of carbenes is reported; NHC and CAAC as donor substituents and compare the molecular structure and coordination to Au(I)Cl to those of NHC-only and CAAC-only analogues. The conjugate acids of these three CDCs exhibit notable redox properties. Their reactions with [NO][SbF6] were investigated. The reduction of the conjugate acid of CAAC-only based CDC with KC8 results in the formation of hydrogen abstracted/eliminated products, which proceed through a neutral radical intermediate, detected by EPR spectroscopy. In contrast, the reduction of conjugate acids of NHC-only and NHC/CAAC based CDCs led to intermolecular reductive (reversible) carbon–carbon sigma bond formation. The resulting relatively elongated carbon– carbon sigma bonds were found to be readily oxidized. They were, thus, demonstrated to be potent reducing agents, underlining their potential utility as organic electron donors and n-dopants in organic semiconductor molecules.
