Abstract

We compute the top quark threshold contributions to the γγ production at the LHC. They appear when the invariant mass of the photon pair, Mγ γ just exceeds two times the mass of the top quark and induce some feature in the Mγ γ distribution. We determine the magnitude of this threshold effect and characterize this feature with a simple empirical fitting function to show that it is possible to observe this effect at the LHC in future. We also explore some possible improvements that may enhance its significance.

Abstract

We consider a generalization of the Standard Model whose action displays conformal invariance in d dimensions. The model contains a strongly coupled dark matter sector which breaks conformal symmetry dynamically. The model evades conformal anomaly and leads to identically zero vacuum energy in flat space-time. Hence it does not suffer from the problem of fine tuning of the cosmological constant. We determine the contribution of non-relativistic matter to the energy-momentum tensor and determine a parameter regime in which it approximately reduces to the standard result. We show how dark energy and dark matter arises in this model. We discuss the parameter range for which the model reduces to the ΛCDM model and hence is consistent with observations.

Abstract

We present the scalar leptoquark pair production process at the LHC computed at the next-to-leading order in QCD, matched to the Pythia parton shower using the MC@ NLO formalism. We consider the leading order decay of a leptoquark to a lepton (e, μ, τ or ν e, ν μ, ν τ) and a jet and observe the effects of parton shower on the final states. For demonstration, we display the kinametical distributions of a selection of observables along with their scale uncertainties for the 13 TeV LHC. We also present pair production cross sections and K-factors using a massless five-quark flavor scheme for different LHC center-of-mass energies. The complete stand-alone code is available online.

Abstract

Quark-lepton compositeness is a well-known beyond the Standard Model (SM) scenario with heavy exotic particles like leptoquarks (LQs) and leptogluons (LGs) etc. These particles can couple to leptons and jets simultaneously. In this letter, we use the recent CMS scalar LQ search data in the e e j j and eej channels to probe this scenario. We recast the data in terms of a color octet partner of the SM electron (or a first generation spin-1/2 LG) that couples to an electron and a gluon via a dimension five operator suppressed by the quark–lepton compositeness scale (Λ). By combining different production processes of the color octet electron (e 8) at the LHC, we use the CMS 8 TeV data to obtain a simultaneous bound on Λ and the mass of the e 8 (M e 8). We also study the reach of the 13 TeV LHC to discover the e 8 and interpret the required luminosity in terms of M e 8 and Λ.

Abstract

Current LHC searches for new colored particles generally focus on their pair production channels and assume any single production to be negligible. We argue that such an assumption may be unnecessary in some cases. Inclusion of model dependent single productions in pair production searches (or vice versa) can give us new information about model parameters or better exclusion limits. Considering the example of the recent CMS search for first generation scalar leptoquarks in the pair production channel, we illustrate how single productions can be systematically included in the signal estimations and demonstrate how it can affect the mass exclusion limits and give new bounds on leptoquark-lepton-quark couplings. We also estimate the effect of the pair production in the more recent CMS search for scalar leptoquarks in single production channels.

Abstract

We study the implications of the ELKO fermions as a cold dark matter candidate. Such fermions arise in theories that are not symmetric under the full Lorentz group. Although they do not carry electric charge, ELKOs can still couple to photons through a nonstandard interaction. They also couple to the Higgs but do not couple to other standard model particles. We impose limits on their coupling strength and the ELKO mass assuming that these particles give dominant contribution to the cosmological cold dark matter. We also determine limits imposed by the direct dark matter search experiments on the ELKO-photon and the ELKO-Higgs coupling. Furthermore we determine the limit imposed by the gamma ray bursts time delay observations on the ELKO-Higgs coupling. Abstract

In the context of a simple five-dimensional (5D) model with bulk matter coupled to a brane-localized Higgs boson, we point out a non-commutativity in the 4D calculation of the mass spectrum for excited fermion towers: the obtained expression depends on the choice in ordering the limits, (infinite Kaluza–Klein tower) and ( being the parameter introduced for regularizing the Higgs Dirac peak). This introduces the question of which one is the correct order; we then show that the two possible orders of regularization (called I and II) are experimentally equivalent, as both can typically reproduce the measured observables, but that the one with less degrees of freedom (I) could be uniquely excluded by future experimental constraints. Abstract

We consider a conformal model involving two real scalar fields in which the conformal symmetry is broken by a soft mechanism and is not anomalous. One of these scalar fields is representative of the standard model Higgs. The model predicts exactly zero cosmological constant. In the simplest version of the model, some of the couplings need to be fine-tuned to very small values. We formulate the problem of fine tuning of these couplings. We argue that the problem arises since we require a soft mechanism to break conformal symmetry. The symmetry breaking is possible only if the scalar fields do not evolve significantly over the time scale of the Universe. Ignoring contributions due to quantum gravity, we present two solutions to this fine tuning problem. We argue that the problem is solved if the classical value of one of the scalar fields is super-Planckian, i.e. takes a value much larger than the Planck mass. The …
