Abstract

Forest inventory parameters, primarily tree diameter and height, are required for several management and planning activities. Currently, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is a promising technology in automated measurements of tree parameters using dense 3D point clouds. In comparison with conventional manual field inventory methods, TLS systems would supplement field data with detailed and relatively higher degree of accurate measurements and increased measurement frequency. Although, multiple scans from TLS captures more area, they are resource and time consuming to ensure proper co-registration between the scans. On the other hand, Single scans provide a fast and recording of the data but are often affected by occlusions between the trees. Abstract

Forest inventories are critical for effective management of forest resources. Recently, the use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to automatically extract forest inventory parameters at tree level (eg tree location, diameter at breast height (DBH) and height) has gained significant importance. TLS using both single-scan and multi-scan techniques, not only helps in detailed and accurate measurements of tree objects but also helps increase the measurement frequency. In the current study, we develop an automated solution to extract forest inventory parameters at individual tree level from TLS data by using random sample consensus (RANSAC)-based circle fitting algorithm. The method was evaluated on both single-and multiscan data by characterizing four circular plots of radius 20 m in dry deciduous forests of Betul, Madhya Pradesh (India). Over all the plots, tree detection rates of 75% and 97% were obtained using single-and multi-scan TLS data respectively. Tree detection rates were significantly affected by increase in distance from the scanner, in single-scan approach when compared to multi-scan approach. Field based DBH measurements correlated well using both single (R2= 0.96) and multiple scans (R2= 0.99). The DBH estimates from multi-scan TLS data resulted in low root-meansquare error (RMSE) of 2.2 cm compared to that of 4.1 cm using single-scan. Further, tree heights were extracted from TLS data and validated with selectively measured trees on field (R2= 0.98; N= 65). The RMSE of tree height was estimated to be 1.65 m. Abstract

In building construction, RC frame structure are frequently used due to ease of construction and rapid progress of work. Generally these frames are filled by masonry in fill panel. However, during past earthquakes it was found that the performance of of such type of structures significantly depends on out-of-plane behavior of infill panel wall. In this study two type of infills are used i.e, unreinforced masonry infill and semi-interlocked masonry infill. For analysis purpose of infill, double strut nonlinear cyclic model is used. The main objective of the study is to investigate the importance interlocked brick infill in RC frame structure. For R factor components such as ductility reduction factor and over strength factors were computed from nonlinear static pushover analysis and finally response reduction factor is calculated for all models. Abstract

This paper is concerned with the study of effect of opening in infills on RC framed structures. Reinforced concrete buildings with masonry infill walls have been widely constructed for commercial, industrial, buildings. In this paper presents the results of analytical program showing behaviour of frames with different masonry infill i.e semi-interlocked masonry & Unreinforced masonry. The effect infill opening on seismic response of frame buildings were evaluated. A nonlinear static analysis has been carried out on different model frames by using finite element analysis software, seismostruct. The results obtained show that calculation of response reduction factor of RC infilled frames with & without opening on infill.

Abstract

Radiating boundary condition is an important consideration in the finite element modelling of unbounded media. Absorbing layer techniques such as Perfectly Matched Layers (PML) and Absorbing Layers by Increasing Damping (ALID) becoming popular as they are efficient in absorbing outward propagating waves energy. In this study, a comparative analysis has been carried out between PML and ALID+VABC (Absorbing Boundary conditions for Viscoelastic materials) methods. The methods are analyzed using LSDYNA explicit solver and the efficiency is compared with standard solutions. The study concluded that PML requires less number of elements to model the boundary conditions when compared with ALID+VABC. But PML requires a smaller element length which increases overall computational time. Both the methods are efficient in absorbing the wave energy. However, PML requires additional implementation cost to solve the complex equations.

Abstract

We developed a set of conformationally locked molecules each of which makes a single CH⋯O H-bond/short contact and has different electron density at the acceptor oxygen atom. The downfield shift of the 1H NMR signals due to the hydrogen involved in the CH⋯O H-bond varied from 0.93–1.6 ppm, and the magnitude of Δδ is in correlation with the hybridization state of the acceptor oxygen and with the CH⋯O H-bond strengths quantified using a computational method.

Abstract

We compute the top quark threshold contributions to the γγ production at the LHC. They appear when the invariant mass of the photon pair, Mγ γ just exceeds two times the mass of the top quark and induce some feature in the Mγ γ distribution. We determine the magnitude of this threshold effect and characterize this feature with a simple empirical fitting function to show that it is possible to observe this effect at the LHC in future. We also explore some possible improvements that may enhance its significance.

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder contributing to rapid decline in cognitive function and ultimately dementia. Most cases of AD occur in elderly and later years. There is a growing need for understanding the relationship between ageing and AD to identify shared and unique hallmarks associated with the disease in a region and cell-type specific manner. Although genomic studies on AD have been performed extensively, the molecular mechanism of disease progression is still not clear. The major objective of our study is to obtain a higher-order network-level understanding of ageing and AD, and their relationship using the hippocampal gene expression profiles of young (20-50yrs), ageing (70-99yrs) and AD (70-99yrs). The hippocampus is vulnerable to damage at early stages of AD and altered neurogenesis in the hippocampus is linked to the onset of AD. We combined the weighted gene co-expression network and weighted protein-protein interaction network-level approaches to study the transition from young to ageing to AD. The network analysis revealed the organization of co-expression network into functional modules that are cell-type specific in ageing and AD. We found that modules associated with astrocytes, endothelial cells and microglial cells are upregulated and significantly correlate with both ageing and AD. The modules associated with neurons, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum are downregulated and significantly correlate with AD than ageing. In response to developmental and environmental conditions, cells exit the mitotic cell cycle and enter the meiosis program to generate haploid gametes from diploid germ cells. Once cells decide to enter the meiosis program they become irreversibly committed to the completion of meiosis irrespective of the presence of cue signals. How meiotic entry and commitment occur due to the dynamics of the regulatory network is not well understood. Therefore, we constructed a mathematical model of the regulatory network that controls the transition from mitosis to meiosis in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Upon nitrogen starvation, yeast cells exit mitosis and undergo conjugation and meiotic entry.
