Abstract

Autonomous camera systems are often subjected to an optimization/filtering operation to smoothen and stabilize the rough trajectory estimates. Most common filtering techniques do reduce the irregularities in data; however, they fail to mimic the behavior of a human cameraman. Global filtering methods modeling human camera operators have been successful; however, they are limited to offline settings. In this paper, we propose two online filtering methods called Cinefilters, which produce smooth camera trajectories that are motivated by cinematographic principles. The first filter (CineConvex) uses a sliding window-based convex optimization formulation, and the second (CineCNN) is a CNN based encoder-decoder model. We evaluate the proposed filters in two different settings, namely a basketball dataset and a stage performance dataset. Our models outperform previous methods and baselines on both quantitative and qualitative metrics. The CineConvex and CineCNN filters operate at about 250fps and 1000fps, respectively, with a minor latency (half a second), making them apt for a variety of real-time applications.

Abstract

Periodic Double Auctions (PDAs) are commonly used in the real world for trading, eg in stock markets to determine stock opening prices, and energy markets to trade energy in order to balance net demand in smart grids, involving trillions of dollars in the process. A bidder, participating in such PDAs, has to plan for bids in the current auction as well as for the future auctions, which highlights the necessity of good bidding strategies. In this paper, we perform an equilibrium analysis of single unit single-shot double auctions with a certain clearing price and payment rule, which we refer to as ACPR, and find it intractable to analyze as number of participating agents increase. We further derive the best response for a bidder with complete information in a single-shot double auction with ACPR. Leveraging the theory developed for single-shot double auction and taking the PowerTAC wholesale market PDA as our testbed, we proceed by modeling the PDA of PowerTAC as an MDP. We propose a novel bidding strategy, namely MDPLCPBS. We empirically show that MDPLCPBS follows the equilibrium strategy for double auctions that we previously analyze. In addition, we benchmark our strategy against the baseline and the state-of-the-art bidding strategies for the PowerTAC wholesale market PDAs, and show that MDPLCPBS outperforms most of them consistently.

Abstract

Advances in mobile computing have paved the way for new types of distributed applications that can be executed solely by mobile devices on device-to-device (D2D) ecosystems (eg, crowdsensing). More sophisticated applications, like cryptocurrencies, need distributed ledgers to function. Distributed ledgers, such as blockchains and directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), employ consensus protocols to add data in the form of blocks. However such protocols are designed for resourceful devices that are interconnected via the Internet. Moreover, existing distributed ledgers are not deployable to D2D ecosystems since their storage needs are continuously increasing. In this work, we introduce Mneme, a DAG-based distributed ledger that can be maintained solely by mobile devices and operates via two consensus protocols: Proof-of-Context (PoC) and Proof-of-Equivalence (PoE). PoC employs users’ context to add data on Mneme. PoE is executed periodically to summarize data and produce equivalent blocks that require less storage. We analyze the security of Mneme and justify the ability of PoC and PoE to guarantee the characteristics of distributed ledgers: persistence and liveness. Furthermore, we analyze potential attacks from malicious users and prove that the probability of a successful attack is inversely proportional to the square of the number of mobile users who maintain Mneme.

Abstract

Despite advances in deep learning and facial recognition techniques, the problem of fault-intolerant facial recognition remains challenging. With the current state of progress in the field of automatic face recognition and the in-feasibility of fully manual recognition, the situation calls for human-machine collaborative methods. We design a system that uses machine predictions for a given face to generate queries that are answered by human experts to provide the system with the information required to predict the identity of the face correctly. We use a Markov Decision Process for which we devise an appropriate query structure and a reward structure to generate these queries in a budget or accuracy-constrained setting. Abstract

In this paper, we introduce Ballooning Multi-Armed Bandits (BL-MAB), a novel extension to the classical stochastic MAB model. In BL-MAB model, the set of available arms grows (or balloons) over time. In contrast to the classical MAB setting where the regret is computed with respect to the best arm overall, the regret in a BL-MAB setting is computed with respect to the best available arm at each time. We first observe that the existing MAB algorithms are not regret-optimal for the BL-MAB model. We show that if the best arm is equally likely to arrive at any time, a sub-linear regret cannot be achieved, irrespective of the arrival of other arms. We further show that if the best arm is more likely to arrive in the early rounds, one can achieve sub-linear regret. Our proposed algorithm determines (1) the fraction of the time horizon for which the newly arriving arms should be explored and (2) the sequence of arm pulls in the exploitation phase from among the explored arms. Making reasonable assumptions on the arrival distribution of the best arm in terms of the thinness of the distribution's tail, we prove that the proposed algorithm achieves sub-linear instance-independent regret. We further quantify the explicit dependence of regret on the arrival distribution parameters. We reinforce our theoretical findings with extensive simulation results.

Abstract

For sponsored search auctions, we consider contextual multi-armed bandit problem in the presence of strategic agents. In this setting, at each round, an advertising platform (center) runs an auction to select the best-suited ads relevant to the query posted by the user. It is in the best interest of the center to select an ad that has a high expected value (ie, probability of getting a click value it derives from a click of the ad). The probability of getting a click (CTR) is unknown to the center and depends on the user's profile (context) posting the query. Further, the value derived for a click is the private information to the advertiser and thus needs to be elicited truthfully. The existing solution in this setting is not practical as it suffers from very high regret ().

Abstract

Abstract— Detecting small obstacles on the road is critical for autonomous driving. In this paper, we present a method to reliably detect such obstacles through a multi-modal framework of sparse LiDAR(VLP-16) and Monocular vision. LiDAR is employed to provide additional context in the form of confidence maps to monocular segmentation networks. We show significant performance gains when the context is fed as an additional input to monocular semantic segmentation frameworks. We further present a new semantic segmentation dataset to the community, comprising of over 3000 image frames with corresponding LiDAR observations. The images come with pixel-wise annotations of three classes off-road, road, and small obstacle. We stress that precise calibration between LiDAR and camera is crucial for this task and thus propose a novel Hausdorff distance based calibration refinement method over extrinsic parameters. As a first benchmark over this dataset, we report our results with 73 % instance detection up to a distance of 50 meters on challenging scenarios. Qualitatively by showcasing accurate segmentation of obstacles less than 15 cms at 50m depth and quantitatively through favourable comparisons vis a vis prior art, we vindicate the method’s efficacy. Abstract

In this paper, we extend the task of semantic textual similarity to include sentences which contain emojis. Emojis are ubiquitous on social media today, but are often removed in the pre-processing stage of curating datasets for NLP tasks. In this paper, we qualitatively ascertain the amount of semantic information lost by discounting emojis, as well as show a mechanism of accounting for emojis in a semantic task. We create a sentence similarity dataset of 4000 pairs of tweets with emojis, which have been annotated for relatedness. The corpus contains tweets curated based on common topic as well as by replacement of emojis. The latter was done to analyze the difference in semantics associated with different emojis. We aim to provide an understanding of the information lost by removing emojis by providing a qualitative analysis of the dataset. We also aim to present a method of using both emojis and words for downstream NLP tasks beyond sentiment analysis.

Abstract

Medical concept normalization aims to map a variable length message such as, ‘unable to sleep’ to an entry in a target medical lexicon, such as ‘Insomnia’. Current approaches formulate medical concept normalization as a supervised text classification problem. This formulation has several drawbacks. First, creating training data requires manually mapping medical concept mentions to their corresponding entries in a target lexicon. Second, these models fail to map a mention to the target concepts which were not encountered during the training phase. Lastly, these models have to be retrained from scratch whenever new concepts are added to the target lexicon. In this work we propose a method which overcomes these limitations. We first use various text and graph embedding methods to encode medical concepts into an embedding space. We then train a model which transforms concept mentions into vectors in this target embedding space. Finally, we use cosine similarity to find the nearest medical concept to a given input medical concept mention. Our model scales to millions of target concepts and trivially accommodates growing target lexicon size without incurring significant computational cost. Experimental results show that our model outperforms the previous state-of-the-art by 4.2% and 6.3% classification accuracy across two benchmark datasets. We also present a variety of studies to evaluate the robustness of our model under different training conditions.

Abstract

We present GAZED– eye GAZ-guided EDiting for videos captured by a solitary, static, wide-angle and high-resolution camera. Eye-gaze has been effectively employed in computational applications as a cue to capture interesting scene content; we employ gaze as a proxy to select shots for inclusion in the edited video. Given the original video, scene content and user eye-gaze tracks are combined to generate an edited video comprising of cinematically valid actor shots and shot transitions to generate an aesthetic and vivid representation of the original narrative. We model cinematic video editing as an energy minimization problem over shot selection, whose constraints capture cinematographic editing conventions. Gazed scene locations primarily determine the shots constituting the edited video. Effectiveness of GAZED against multiple competing methods is demonstrated via a psychophysical study involving 12 users and twelve performance videos. Professional video recordings of stage performances are typically created by employing skilled camera operators, who record the performance from multiple viewpoints. These multi-camera feeds, termed rushes, are then edited together to portray an eloquent story intended to maximize viewer engagement. Generating professional edits of stage performances is both difficult and challenging. Firstly, maneuvering cameras during a live performance is difficult even for experts as there is no option of retake upon error, and camera viewpoints are limited as the use of large supporting equipment (trolley, crane .) is infeasible. Secondly, manual video editing is an extremely slow and tedious process and leverages the experience of skilled editors. Overall, the need for (i) a professional camera crew, (ii) multiple cameras and supporting equipment, and (iii) expert editors escalates the process complexity and costs. Consequently, most production houses employ a large field-of-view static camera, placed far enough to capture the entire stage. This approach is widespread as it is simple to implement, and also captures the entire scene. Such static visualizations are apt for archival purposes; however, they are often unsuccessful at captivating attention when presented to the target audience. While conveying the overall context, the distant camera feed fails to bring out vivid scene details like close-up faces, character emotions and actions, and ensuing interactions which are critical for cinematic storytelling. GAZED denotes an end-to-end pipeline to generate an aesthetically edited video from a single static, wide-angle stage recording. This is inspired by prior work [GRG14], which describes how a plural camera crew can be replaced by a single highresolution static camera, and multiple virtual camera shots or rushes generated by simulating several virtual pan/tilt/zoom cameras to focus on actors and actions within the original recording. In this work, we demonstrate that the multiple rushes can be automatically edited by leveraging user eye gaze information, by modeling (virtual) shot selection as a discrete optimization problem. Eye-gaze represents an inherent guiding factor for video editing, as eyes are sensitive to interesting scene events [RKH∗ 09, SSSM14] that need to be vividly presented in the edited video. The objective critical for video editing and the key contribution of our work is to decide which shot (or rush) needs to be selected to describe each frame of the edited video. The shot selection problem is modeled as an optimization, which incorporates gaze information along with other cost terms that model cinematic editing principles. Gazed scene locations are utilized to define gaze potentials, which measure the importance of the different shots to choose from. Gaze potentials are then combined with other terms that model cinematic principles like avoiding jump cuts (which produce jarring shot transitions), rhythm (pace of shot transitioning), avoiding transient shots .
