The Position:

Applied Research Faculty is a full-time faculty-equivalent-position requiring a research aptitude and industry experience. A role that is required to bring in applied research insights into the university, bring in a solution and applications view of research, source problems from society and industry that can be addressed only with new research, and bring in a systems thinking into the research world.

Context and Requirement

The Virtual Lab Project, IIIT Hyderabad, requires one Web developer and one Systems Engineer now and may need more as the project progresses. For this, we are looking at working with organizations that can provide the project with competent professionals with relevant skills and experience as required in individual Job Description documents. The idea is that these professionals will satisfy Virtual Lab, IIIT Hyderabad management and give confidence that they will deliver the expected outcomes of the project. For this, Virtual Labs will examine, interview, and verify the competence and attitude of the professionals for every role/ JD. Biometrics and Secure Identity Lab at IIIT Hyderabad, engages in research and development with multiple projects in the field of Biometrics and Machine Learning. About project:

The project involves fundamental and applied research aspects of circuits, systems and sensors in biomedical domain, where an indigenous electronic device is being developed for the early and reliable diagnosis of a fatal disease in young children. The project includes integrated and discrete level circuit design, tape-outs, sensor development and bioinformatics, which are expected to result in new technologies, patents, high quality papers and novel products.

1. Ph.D./MS/RA in electronics area (Circuits/Sensors/Embedded-Systems)

(Prerequisite: B.Tech or M.Tech/MS in Electronics Engineering, M.Tech/MS preferred for Ph.D. positions. B.Tech final semester students looking for internships are also encouraged to apply.)

Scholars will work on circuit design (analog/RF/mixed-signal), sensors, and system integration towards their Ph.D./MS/RA research. Desirable skills – basic knowledge of circuit analysis and design, prior experience of working with microcontrollers or experience in PCB design, or sensor design will be an added advantage.

2. Ph.D./RA in bioinformatics area

(Prerequisite: M.Sc./ B.Tech/ M.Tech in microbiology/ biotechnology/ bioinformatics/ biochemistry)

Scholars will work on genome analysis and other biological aspects of the project. They will be closely working with medical practitioners and research scientists in this area.

IIIT Hyderabad announces a yearlong Research Translation Fellowship for working professionals to work on creating products from emerging research. The full-time fellowship will include a stipend and a chance to work with research groups and professors. One can take courses through PGSSP ( 2 Courses per Semester).

The fellows will work with the research translation centers underway in centers including the Applied AI center/INai, Product Labs, Smart Cities Living Lab, Raj Reddy Center for Technology and Society. Technologies considered will be from recent works of professors in the 20+ research centers of IIITH including emerging areas like AI, IOT, NLP, CV, robotics and other emerging technologies.

Products and solutions built may be in domains like healthcare monitoring, medical diagnostic algorithms, genomics, autonomous vehicles, safety solutions, education tech AI, speech, and language solutions for business, smart city device and AI analytics, social sector solutions in education and healthcare. The Fellows will be part of a team to build one of these solutions in the year.

This one-year research immersion will enable professionals to work with the research groups, chance to get exposed to the latest research, and through the effort to build a product to understand the real-world use of such research.

Immediate Staffing Requirements for Virtual Labs, IIIT Hyderabad Project Phase 4.

Context and Requirement

The Virtual Lab Project, IIIT Hyderabad, requires one Web Developer and one Systems Engineer now and may need more as the project progresses. For this, we are looking at working with organizations that can provide the project with competent professionals with relevant skills and experience as required in individual job description documents. The idea is that these professionals will satisfy Virtual Lab, IIIT Hyderabad management and give confidence that they will deliver the expected outcomes of the project. For this, Virtual Labs will examine, interview, and verify the competence and attitude of the professionals for every role/ JD. For each of the selected professionals who join and successfully demonstrate their capability, a pre-agreed monthly fee will be paid to the vendor organizations providing them. The vendor organization will strive to provide people till an acceptable one is found. Other processes relevant to acceptance criteria for individual performance, replacement of individual professionals who leave the assignment in between, if it happens, can be proposed and mutually agreed upon.

Campus

IIIT Hyderabad’s 66-acre campus, located on Gachibowli road (aka Old Bombay Highway) is centrally located and well connected by all means of transport. The institute is surrounded by many academic and research institutions – Hyderabad Central University, Indian School of Business (ISB), TCS-CMC, Indian Immunologicals and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Development Banking (JNIDB), and is just minutes away from the bustling HiTech City Center and Lingampally.

On campus facilities include State Bank of India branch, ATM machine, stationary shop and canteens. The campus is efficiently guarded by 24-hour security at the hostels, main gate and all academic and administrative buildings. There’s just one entry and exit point so safety and security are never compromised. Evenings on campus are a pleasant sight with well-lit streets and common areas surrounded by mature trees and lush greenery.

Labs & Workspaces

The Institute has well-equipped, air-conditioned computer laboratories with the latest hardware and software allocated to students batch-wise. The average PC-to-student ratio is 1:2. All computers are part of an intranet (1Gbps backbone), which connects all buildings including the hostels round the clock. Researchers have 24-hour access to the computational facilities. The students administer their own computer systems. Research centers provide specialized, high-end equipment as needed in research and development projects.

New workspaces have been set up for students where they can work in a quiet space. These spaces have been designed and built with modern facilities such as ergonomic chairs and desks, discussion rooms, white boards, etc and can accommodate up to 200 students at any given time.

In addition, there are two new Teaching Labs equipped with state-of-the-art teaching aids including projectors, TV screens and theatre-style seating that can accommodate up to 100 students at any given time.

In order to deliver sustainable and reliable computing resources and services to meet research demands of IIITH’s highly computational research community, the institute has a High-Performance Computing (HPC) service that provides campus researchers with cutting-edge computing infrastructure, enabling them to address scientific, application and engineering problems and solve challenges in the areas of Computer Vision, Machine/Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Bioinformatics as well as investigate chemical and biological processes such as protein folding.

The HPC cluster facility, named, “Ada” after Ada Lovelace, the first ever computer programmer, consists of 92 nodes, each equipped with dual Intel Xeon E5-2640 v4 processor, 128 GB RAM, four Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti / RTX 2080 Ti GPUs and two scratch disks (2 TB SATA and 960 GB SSD SATA). The cluster has a total of 3680 CPU cores, 1472512 GPU cores and 11776 GB RAM. The aggregate theoretical peak performance is 70.66 TFLOPS.

Abacus is the first HPC cluster facility of IIITH, with a total of 59 HP SL230s compute nodes. Each node is equipped with two Intel Xeon E5-2640 processors, 48 to 96 GB RAM and 2 TB scratch disk. The nodes are interconnected through Gigabit and 4X QDR Infiniband. The cluster provides about 14 TFLOPS of peak computing power.

Polymer Lab: Flexible Circuits and Systems (FleCS Lab) focuses on the development of flexible circuits, sensor systems, polymer-based device fabrication and characterization. In this lab, students have access to state-of-the-art equipment for polymer research such as spin-coater, ultrasonicator, vacuum chamber, centrifuge, precision pipettes, microscope, magnetic stirrer, and precision weighing scale. Areas of research include fabrication of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) for soft robotics applications, development of polymer-based conductive inks, and development of novel flexible sensor systems.

Product Labs, the market relevant product engineering arm of technology transfer office (TTO) curates and brings relevant market/business insights to the institute, defines products based on market potential, enables market/licensing readiness of Institute research and identifies “Go To Market” owner and collaborates with partnering corporates/Investors.

Embedded Systems and IoT Lab is equipped with ARM Processor kits, ATMEGA32 boards, Altera FPGA Boards, Zed boards, TI Mixed Signal System Development kit

Optical and  RF Lab consists of optical sensors, ring lasers, modulators and optical signal processing devices.

Library

The Library has a large collection of reference books, text books, technical reports, standards, literature books and CD-ROMS. It is managed by a fully integrated multi-user Library Management Software that automates cataloguing and circulation services  along with a Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) facility.

A digital library is also maintained to archive useful software, books and tutorials. Students can download any permitted software from this resource. Numerous textbooks and reference books are available in the digital format as well. Many lectures have also been recorded and are available online for students to use. Most courses maintain an intranet site containing lecture slides and other course material.

The library also has a new reading room and stack area-cum-reading space where students can bring their own books to study.

Accommodation

IIITH is a residential institute and it is compulsory for all students to stay on-campus. First year and second year students who have enrolled in Bachelor’s or dual-degree programs are required to share rooms (double occupancy) whereas, from the third year onward, students have single occupancy. An optical fiber network connects all campus buildings including the hostels.

IIITH has five hostels – three for boys and two for girls.

Palash Nivas (Old Boys Hostel) for undergraduate students from second year onwards and first -year postgraduate students. The hostel is attached to the North and South Mess.

Bakul Nivas for undergraduate first year students and second year postgraduate students.

The institute provides housing facilities for faculty and staff spread across 100 apartments on campus in C & D Block, as well as Anand and Budh Nivas. There’s also a guest house with four air-conditioned suites for visitors to campus.

Dining

There are 3 vegetarian (North, South and Yuktahar) and 1 non-vegetarian mess (Kadamb) on campus. Kadamb serves non-veg five times a week. Spacious and modern kitchens cater healthy and nutritious meals. Students can choose to dine at any mess.

There are also 3 canteens on campus –  near Vindhya block, next to the basketball court, and at the guesthouse –  that serve snacks and beverages throughout the day and late into the evening.

Sports

The institute gives sufficient incentive for everyone to excel in the sport of their choice, ranging from cricket, volleyball, soccer, basketball, table tennis, etc. IIITH also has an understanding with nearby stadiums for other sports facilities such as badminton, hockey, swimming, etc.

IIITH also has a new open air fitness park beside the basketball court kitted with four wheel shoulder builder, air skyer, cross walker, rower, roman rings with twister, shoulder press, chest press, push & dip station, air walker, knee chair, abs shaper, monkey bar, etc.

There’s also a yoga room with a trained yoga instructor who conducts classes for students, faculty and staff in the mornings as well as evenings.

Cultural spaces

Tarangini amphitheatre has 4 rooms spread across two floors, each with a specific student purpose, such as dance, music etc. and others to be used as green rooms for stage performances. Tarangini is also a WiFi enabled building with 24×7 WiFi access, so that students can use it both as a cultural and interaction spot.

IIITH has a record number of breathtaking wall murals. The walls of the barricades, benches on campus as well as some of the buildings in the campus are painted with various themes by students during Felicity, the annual college fest, as well as on other special events. This artwork tradition has been handed down by successive batches of students and is usually done by students of the Art Club.

Health & Wellness

Aarogya Centre, IIITH’s on-campus clinic provides primary medical care to students, faculty, staff and on-campus residents. The services include Allopathy, Ayurveda and Homeopathy systems of medicine.  A 24×7 ambulance service is provided too.
 
Doctors from Care Hospital are available at the Centre daily from 10am – 12pm and 4pm – 6pm on weekdays and 10am – 12 noon on Sundays. A 24×7 round the year nurse service is also available.
 
The Centre provides both outpatient and limited inpatient care. Emergency care services (ER) as well as laboratory services can be availed at Care Hospitals. Visiting consultants for gynaecology, paediatrics, dentistry are also available on a monthly basis. For patients who are not able to visit the Centre, telephonic video consultation and lab services can be arranged.
 
Ayurvedic and Homeopathy doctors attend the clinic twice and once a week respectively and are available for consultations during this time.
 
Psychological counselling services are provided at Arogya Centre. The team consists of a psychiatrist and 2 counselling psychologists/ psychotherapist.
 
The Centre is always well stocked with general medicines as well as nebulisation and oxygen concentrators. First aid boxes are available at all hostel security posts.
 
IIITH also has MOUs with Care Hospitals Hitec City, AIG Gachibowli and Rainbow Children’s Medicare in the Financial District, which are all within a 4-5km radius from campus and reachable in just 10-15 minutes.

Pay & Enabling Factors

The Institute’s faculty employment type and pay scales are on par with 7th CPC as per MHRD guidelines. Overall, the compensation, benefits and facilities are amongst the best institutes of national importance.

The Institute bears the cost of travel for self and immediate family by air (economy class) and relocation expenses during the time of joining as per the rules.

Being a research based Institute, we lay high emphasis on faculty pursuing research immediately after joining the Institute and offers seed funding to do so.

Fund towards professional development is available to all faculty members, which can be used for buying books, professional memberships, attend conferences and seminars, meet travel expenses for attending conferences, etc.

IIIT-H encourages faculty members to take up consultancy assignments with corporates, public sector and other research based institutes and organizations.

The Institute goes out of the way to extend help to individual faculty wanting to pursue research in specific area of interest.

The institute has fixed a standard amount of Rs. one lakh for new faculty member to buy his/her laptop or desktop in addition to the office space and other facilities

The Institute offers one-year sabbatical for accepting academic assignments abroad, attaining competitive scholarships and fellowships. Faculty who have completed six years of continual service with the Institute are entitled to avail sabbatical. During this period, the faculty would be paid as per the norms of the Institute.

The Institute functions efficiently through agile and lean structure facilitating speed in response in all aspects of administration.

Faculty who stay on campus are provided reasonably priced paid accommodation. The institute also provides a nominal amount towards rentals for faculty who wish to stay off campus for an initial period of three years.

The Institute provides paid day care facility within campus for the children of both faculty and staff.

IIIT-H Aarogyya Center provides out-patient services to the campus residents by consulting doctors specialized in Allopathic, Homoeopathic and Ayurveda. Consultancy is given free of cost to all the IIIT-H family members. Towards hospitalization, Institute reimburses annually Rs.20,000/- towards premium for covering self and dependent family members.

Children in Hyderabad schools have to study for ten years in schools, followed by two years in junior college before becoming eligible to enroll for graduation programme in a college. Colleges in Hyderabad offer graduation, post-graduation and doctoral programmes in science, arts, engineering, commerce, law, medicine and fashion.

Hyderabadi cuisine is a blend of traditional South Indian, Mughal, and Persian cuisine. Hyderabadi Biryani is an iconic dish of the region. Italian, Mexican, Chinese and Continental cuisine have also become popular.

Culturally, the city is rich in performing arts and its rich legacy in dance, music and drama. There are centers for arts and cultures around the city to facilitate and promote creative atmosphere.   • I will be defending my thesis soon (I don’t have the PhD degree yet), can I still apply?
    Yes, candidates with outstanding credentials can be considered and offered faculty position conditional on successful completion of PhD.
  • I am a fresh PhD, what kind of appointment can I expect?
    Fresh PhD applicants with excellent academic and research record will be considered for the position of Assistant Professors on contract.
  • I am living outside India, do I have to come down to IIIT-H for an interview?
    Yes, IIIT-H encourages faculty from abroad as full-time, guest or visiting faculty. We do have a provision for conducting skype / video interviews. However, the final round of interview is organized in person based on mutual convenience.
  • How long will it take IIIT-H to make me an offer?
    It takes anywhere between 2-4 weeks to consider faculty applications after the Selection Committee completes the process.
  • How soon will I be expected to join after getting the offer?
    About 1-2 months, but we are flexible in considering requests for extension in joining time. Acceptance or rejection of the offer, however, is expected within 7 days of the date the offer is made.
  • When would the Semester begin and end?
    Fall: 1st August – 30th November Spring: 1st January – 30th April
  • What is the expected teaching load per year/semester?
    The typical teaching load per year is three courses. This includes core courses at the undergraduate level also.
  • How many days a week does a faculty member work? What are the work hours?
    The Institute follows a 6-day, 40 hours per week schedule for faculty. However, faculty members at IIIT-H, as at any premier institute in the world, generally work way beyond the Institute hours. There is also enormous flexibility offered in terms of work-from-home.
  • Does IIIT-H have start-up/seed grants available for new faculty?
    Yes, IIIT-H encourages new faculty to submit research proposals to the Institute, and start building up their research program as soon as they join. A one-time seed grant is offered to kick-start the research activity.
  • How can a faculty member develop research facilities?
    The Institute goes out of the way to extend help to individual faculty wanting to pursue research in specific area of interest. In addition, research proposals including expenditure for research infrastructure, can be submitted to the Institute or to external funding agencies. Also, new faculty member given resources to support 4 research students for a tenure of 3 years.
  • Is there a limit on the research initiation grant that IIIT-H can give?
    There are no predefined limits. Every application is judged on merit.
  • Are faculty members expected to write research proposals to funding agencies?
    Yes, the Institute strongly encourages faculty to seek external funding for research. Securing external funding for research is a key catalyst for a vibrant research culture, developing institutional facilities, and training research manpower.
  • How do we apply for research funds from industries and government agencies?
    There are calls for proposals and you can visit companies to seek funding. Alternatively, you can collaborate with others. You can discuss with the Dean (R&D) to obtain more details.
  • Is there any other funding for professional development?
    A professional development fund of INR 50,000/- per year is available to all faculty members. Additional fund of INR 75,000/- – INR 1,00,000/- is available for publishing high quality research papers. Institute grants INR 3,00,000/- towards international travel.
  • Can faculty take up consultancies?
    IIIT-H encourages faculty members to take up consultancy assignments based on high end expertise of the faculty, not easily available outside. They are allowed to spend one day in 7 days on consultancy work. The Institute deducts nominal costs towards overheads from the income. The consultancies need to be conducted through the Institute, and shall not be in the faculty member’s personal capacity.
  • Are employment opportunities available for spouses at IIIT-H or in the neighborhood?
    Merit of the candidate is the main consideration, and IIIT-H neither gives preference nor discriminates in hiring spouses. The Institute is located in an economically vibrant city and there would be many employment opportunities for spouses.
  • Does the Institute reimburse travel and relocation Expenses towards Joining IIIT-H?
    IIIT-H bears the cost of travel for the incumbent and immediate family by Air (economy class) or II A/C Train from place of stay to Hyderabad, India. To claim reimbursement, e-Ticket along with boarding pass needs to be furnished along with appropriate bills, if applicable.
    In addition, freight charges up to INR 50,000/- (within India) and INR 1,00,000/- (from outside India) is paid. To avail tax exemption, all necessary bills / receipts need to be furnished before the closing of financial year.
  • Housing & Temporary Accommodation
    The Institute has a residential campus for faculty and students. Faculty are provided with reasonably priced rented accommodation.
  • How much salary can one expect at IIIT-H?

    The Institute’s faculty employment type and pay scales are on par with 7th CPC as per MHRD guidelines. Overall, the compensation, benefits and facilities are amongst the best institutes of national importance.

  • How about pay revisions? 

    Pay revisions are done periodically in line with the national revisions and also after a full appraisal every year.

  • Does the Institute recognize faculty’s exceptional achievements by way of higher salary, etc.?

    Yes, exceptional performance is always valued at the institute. Additional professional development funds are made available for exceptional performers.
  • Are there any medical and hospitalization benefits for self and family members? 

    IIIT-H Aarogyya Center provides out-patient services to the campus residents by consulting doctors specialized in Allopathic, Homoeopathic and Ayurveda. Consultancy is given free of cost to all the IIIT-H family members. The Institute reimburses annually Rs.20,000/- to faculty towards premium for covering self and dependent family members towards hospitalization

  • Does the Institute provide for traveling to home town? 

    Leave Travel Allowance of Rs.40,000/- to faculty is provided.

  • What is the leave/vacation entitlement of faculty members at IIIT-H?

    A faculty member is entitled to 12 days of casual leave in a calendar year (pro-rated according to the date of joining) and 60 days of vacation leave in a year as per the rules laid down by IIIT-H. Traveling on duty, such as attending a conference, committee meetings, evaluations, etc.., does not count towards these leave days.
  • What type of retirement benefits are available?

    The new pension scheme (NPS) is applicable to all faculty members. Gratuity on completion of five years of continual service with IIIT-H.
  • Does IIIT-H provide for sabbaticals?

    The Institute offers one-year sabbatical for accepting academic assignments abroad, attaining competitive scholarships and fellowships. Faculty who have completed six years of continual service with the Institute are entitled to avail sabbatical. During this period, the faculty would be paid as per the norms of the Institute.
  • Does IIIT-H offer visiting appointments of short durations such as one semester or one year?Yes, IIIT-H encourages qualified candidates to apply for such appointments.
  • I would like to spend a part of my sabbatical in India. What kinds of opportunities are available at IIIT-H?Academics planning to take a sabbatical at IIIT-H for a semester or a year can teach one course per semester.
