The International Institute of Information Technology,Hyderabad is the only Indian institute partipating in the Cansat Competition sponsored by NASA

Cansat Competition is a design -build-fly competition organised to create an experience of the design life cycle of a typical aerospace system. This is the reason it includes mission requirements which are designed to reflect various aspects of the real world missions.Team of students (graduate, undergraduate or both) are required to design and build a satellite -like system called a CANSAT. The theme of 2009 CANSAT competition is remote sensing and objective is to demonstrate the viability and utility of distributed sensors to measure common characteristics.

The mission is to launch an autonomous CANSAT that operates as a remote sensor in a large network of sensors.During descent , the CANSAT shall collect and telemeter GPS data, altitude calculated by means other than GPS and certain house keeping telemetry. Descent data is also required to be displayed in real time on the team groung control station. Upon landing, the CANSAT shall change to a "remote sensor" configuration, in which CANSAT measures ground surface temperature via direct contact and telemeters. The data to a common GCS when polled via a provided data relay and communication channel. Science data is to be telemetered for 3 hours following landing. Team GCS can passively monitor telemetry during this phase.

The American Astronautical Society (AAS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) have organized an annual student design-build-launch competition for space-related topics. The competition is available to university and college students from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Although similar competitions exist for other fields of engineering (robots, radio-control airplanes, racing cars, etc.), most space-related competitions are paper design competitions. While these are worthwhile, they do not give students the satisfaction of being involved with the end-to-end life cycle of a complex engineering project, from conceptual design, through integration and test, actual operation of the system and concluding with a post-mission summary and debrief. This competition fulfills that need!
