Faculty
      • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das has been appointed as an Associate Editor for the prestigious flagship journal: IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. IEEE T-IFS ranks #2 in the list of top venues (conference & journals) in Computer Security & Cryptography and first (Rank #1) among all journal publications. Its impact factor is 6.8.
      • Prof. Nimmi Rangaswamy has been appointed chair of advisory board to UNU institute in Macau effective from January 2024.
      • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das served as one of the Technical Program Committee Chairs at the 7th International Conference on Applied Soft Computing and Communication Networks (ACN-23) held in Bangalore from 18 - 20 December 2023.
      • Dr. Semparithi Aravindan, Center for Computational Natural Sciences and Bioinformatics (CCNSB) has been promoted as an Associate Professor (Systems). His research interests are in Energy flow in molecules, structure and dynamics of molecular clusters.
      • Dr. Santosh Ravi Kiran S, Center for Visual Information Technology (CVIT) has been promoted as an Associate Professor. His research interests are in Computer vision, machine learning, virtual reality, robotics, affective computing, document analysis and multimedia.
      • Dr. Radhika Krishnan, Human Sciences Research Group (HSRG) has been promoted as an Associate Professor. Her research interests are in Technology studies, ecology, development and labour.

 

Student
    • Students of Software Engineering Research Center (SERC) bagged best student poster awards at the 14th Innovations in Software Engineering Conference held in Bangalore from 22 – 24 February. Rudra Dhar, Ph.D student working with Dr. Karthik Vaidhyanathan and Vasudeva Varma for his work on Leveraging Generative AI for Architectural Knowledge Management. Shubham Kulkarni, MS by research student working with Dr. Karthik Vaidhyanathan for his work on AdaMLS: A Self-adaptive Approach for Enhancing the Quality of Service of ML-enabled Systems.
    • Team – Wanderlust consisting Aditya Ranjan Padhi (UG3); Aniketh Parkala (UG3); Gnaneswar Kulindala (UG3); Harsh Kapoor (UG1); Mayank Goel (UG3); Madhan Sai Krishna Chamarthy (UG1); Shreya Bollimuntha (UG3); Shreyas Kumar Sinha (UG3) and Sreyas Saminathan (UG3) participated in the prestigious 2024 CanSat competition, a global event organised by the American Astronautical Society. Team – Wanderlust obtained a global rank of 4, securing an invitation to participate in the further phases of the competition.
    • IIITH students bagged several prizes at Elan and nVision techno-cultural fest of IIT Hyderabad. Fix the bug contest 1st prize – Rinish Sam I, MTech 2k23 (CSE); Varun Edachali, UG 2k22 (CSE); Maddireddy Kritin, UG 2k22 (CSE) 2nd prize – Udith Krishna M Nair, UG 2k23 (CSD); Adithya Kishor, UG 2k23 (CSD); Shubham Goel, UG 2k23 (CSE) 3rd prize – Anirudh Sankar, UG 2k23 (CSD); Aditya Shankar, UG 2k23 (CSD) Top 2 prizes at Verilog Hackathon Yash Bhutada and Arya Topale from Electronics and Robotics club (ERC) won 1st prize. Soham Vaishnav and Rupak Antani secured the runner-up spot.
    • Jewel Benny supervised by Prof. Abhishek Srivastava was awarded the Chanakya UG Fellowship by iHub IIIT Delhi for his research work on Design and Measurements of mmWave FMCW Radar Based Non-Contact Multi-Patient Heart Rate and Breath Rate Monitoring System.
    • Research work by IIITH researchers Shashwat Goel and Nikhil Chandak; and Dominik Peters, National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Paris was awarded an outstanding paper award at AAAI 2024 for their research work on Proportional Aggregation of Preferences for Sequential Decision Making.
    • Anis Fatema, PhD student of Dr. Aftab M Hussain won second prize in Young Professionals (YP) session and another second prize in the Student Research Forum Award for Fabrication of Flexible Pressure Sensor Systems for Biomedical Applications at the IEEE APSCON 2024. Both awards carry significant cash prizes and a certificate.
    • Basketball team - girls were runners-up at the intercollegiate tournament held at Mahindra university, Hyderabad. The team members were Sriya Venepally, Pranali Jagdale, Anuhya Nallapati, Saumya Balina, Aishita Marri, Srujana Vanka, Bollimuntha Shreya and Prajna Penmesta.
    • Team Lucid- consisting of M.Tech PDM students - Shambhavi Ojha, Aniket Chandekar, Anuj Malviya, Vinaya Gopi and Venkat Sai Nadakudati, have won D'source DIC-BHU Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Design Challenge B under the Interaction design Category.
    • Startup - HydrowVerse Pvt Ltd founded by Dr. Sachin Chaudhari, Signal Processing and Communications Research Center (SPCRC) and Smart City Research Centre(SCRC) and Co-Founded by Thomas David Tency, Research Assistant was awarded the NPCI Best Innovation Award at the event - Fetching Fortunes at E Summit organised by the IIT Hyderabad. The team was given ₹1 Lac worth credits and awards.
    • Research work on Global Space Modelling Of Biological Processes With Cross-sectional Data by Prof. Jayanthi Sivaswamy and her students - J Thottupattu and Venky P was awarded the best paper nomination award at ICVGIP 2023 - 14th Indian Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing held from 15 - 17 December 2023 at IIT Ropar.
    • IIIT Hyderabad Basketball team were Runner-up at the intercollegiate tournament held at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Madhapur from 2 to 3 February. Team members were Revanth Gundam, Atharv Johar, Sriram Alluri, Aadarsh Raghunathan, Aniketh Atmakuri, Amogh Tiwari, Ashwin Rudraraju, Sudarshan Nikhil and Janardan. Mr, Samson Xavier was the team coach.
    • Mr. Anirudh Palutla, a Dual-degree student of CCNSB, has been offered a Research Scientist position at Janelia Research Campus (JRC), USA. JRC is a scientific research campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
    • Pragati Gupta supervised by Dr. Kavita Vemuri won third prize at INOS-2023 in poster session for their research work on Binocular Pupillary Response to Chromatic Light as Potential Marker- A Preliminary Observation at the 5th Annual Conference of Indian Neuro Ophthalmology Society held from 9 - 10 December at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH).
    • Research work on Assessment of Flow Regimes and Water Temperature: A Case Study on Yamuna and Bhadra River Systems by Dr. Shaik Rehana and her students Satish Kumar Mummidivarapu, Ph.D; Jaya Bharat Reddy, CSE Dual Degree was awarded the best paper award at the 28th International Conference on Hydraulics, Water Resources, and River Engineering (HYDRO-2023) held at National Institute of Technology Warangal (NIT Warangal) from 20 to 22 December 2023.

    • In a survey conducted by DataQuest Best T-School, IIIT Hyderabad has been ranked No. 1 at All India Level and in the South zone. The survey focused on UG programs offered at the UG programs offered at technical / engineering institutions.
    • Research work on The WMDP Benchmark: Measuring and Reducing Malicious Use With Unlearning was featured in TIME Magazine. Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru (PK) and his student Shashwat Goel, UG5 are among several authors of this research work.

  • Research work by Dr. Ankit Gangwal and his M.Tech students Shubham Singh and Abhijeet Srivastava on AutoSpill: Credential Leakage from Mobile Password Managers won the best paper award at CODASPY 2023 and was also presented at BLACKHAT EU 2023.
  • Dr. Vishnu Sreekumar has been invited to be the editorial team member of Psychological Science, the flagship journal of the Association for Psychological Science (APS) from 1 January 2024.
  • Dr. P Pravin Kumar Venkat Rao, has been inducted as a panel member to the 7 member committee of the Civil Engineering Division (CED-13:P5) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for reviewing the old Indian standards.
  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das has been included in the list of Web of Science (Clarivate™) Highly Cited Researcher 2023 in recognition for his exceptional research performance demonstrated by production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% for field and year. Each researcher selected has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers™ which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science™ over the past decade.
  • Dr. Diganta Das’s Start-up Research Grant (SRG) proposal on Phenomenology of hadronic decays and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model was approved by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body under DST.
  • Prof. Madhava Krishna has been elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) for the year 2023. The Indian National Academy of Engineering honours Indian and foreign nationals who are elected by “peer” committees in recognition of their personal achievements in “Engineering” which are of exceptional merit and demonstrated distinctive eminence in the new and developing fields of technology.
  • Prof. Kishore Kothapalli has been awarded the Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam HPC Award for the year 2023 for developing parallel algorithm engineering techniques that efficiently harness the power of parallel architectures, especially for irregular computations arising from graphs and matrices and their applications. The award was given by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) a company committed to promoting advancements in High-Performance Computing. These awards celebrate and showcase individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to the advancement of HPC in science, engineering, and beyond.
  • Dr. Shatrunjay Rawat has been invited to be the external expert for the university-level committee of AICTE – University Human Values Cell (UHV Cell) by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad. This committee is for a duration of 3 years.
  • Research work of Dr. Sujit Gujar on Your Favorite Gameplay Speaks Volumes about You: Predicting User Behavior and Hexad Type has been awarded the Best Paper Award at HCI International 2023 held at Copenhagen, Denmark from 23 - 28 July.
  • Prof. Ashok Kumar Das, Center for Security, Theory and Algorithms (CSTAR) has been promoted as a Professor. His research areas are cryptography, network security, system security, blockchain, security in Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV), Internet of Drones (IoD), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and cloud computing, AI/ML security, intrusion detection, and post-quantum cryptography.
  • Prof. Anoop Namboodiri, Center for Visual Information Technology (CVIT) has been promoted as a Professor. His research areas are pattern recognition, machine learning, computer vision and biometrics.
  • Dr. Aftab M Hussain, Center for VLSI and Embedded Systems Technology (CVEST) has been promoted as an Associate Professor. His research areas are flexible and stretchable electronics, IoT devices, smart city research and LoRaWAN devices.
  • Dr. Shaik Rehana, Lab for Spatial Informatics (LSI) has been promoted as an Associate Professor. Her research areas hydrologic impacts of climate change, statistical downscaling, uncertainty modelling, water quality management, reservoir operation, irrigation planning.
  • Dr. Subhadip Mitra, Center for Computational Natural Sciences and Bioinformatics (CCNSB) has been promoted as an Associate Professor. His research areas are high energy Physics theory, phenomenology and cosmology.
  • Adobe Inc. has awarded Prof. Vasudeva Varma, Dr. Sujit Gujar and Dr. Makarand Tapaswi, Adobe Research Gift Awards for their research activities. The award is in the form of an unrestricted gift to the academic institution under the names of the researchers who submitted the proposal.
  • The 9th edition of Research.com recognizes Dr. Ashok Kumar Das as best scientist in the discipline of Computer Science. His D-index is 65; Citations is 12,220; Publications is 270; world ranking is 1,560 and national ranking is 10.
  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das has also been appointed as a member of the Technical Program Committee (TPC) of the 19th IEEE International Conference on Wireless and Mobile Computing, Networking and Communications (WiMob 2023) to be held in Montreal, Canada from 21 - 23 June.
  • Research work done by Dr. Chittaranjan Hens on Emergent stability in complex network dynamics has been published in Nature Physics.
  • Dr. Karthik Vaidhyanathan was a member of the organising committee of the recently concluded 20th edition of the IEEE International conference on software architecture (ICSA-2023) held at L’Aquila, Italy from 13 to 17 March. ICSA-2023 is a premier (Tier A) conference in the field of Software Architecture. Karthik was part of the organising committee alongside some of the eminent researchers/scientists in the field of software architecture from different parts of the world.
  • Dr. T K Saroja was felicitated by the Department of Language and Culture, Telangana Government, in association with Arunodaya Kalasamithi on International Women’s Day Celebrations 2023 on 9 March at Ravindra Bharathi.
  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das is one of the Advisory Board members of the 5th International Congress on Blockchain and Applications (BLOCKCHAIN'23) which will be held in Guimarães, Portugal from 12 to 14 July.
  • Dr. K S Rajan has been nominated by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare to be one of the lT Advisory committee members towards speedy and systematic implementation of Krishi Decision Support System  project to be carved-out from Visualisation of Earth Observation Data and Archival  (VEDAS) portal.

  • Research work by Rishikesh Bose, Dr. Sujit Gujar, N Patil, A K Dwivedi, Dr. Kavita Vemuri, Prof. Sachin Chaudhari, on Comparative Analysis of Construction-Related Air Pollution In Indoor and Outdoor Environments’ won the Best Paper award at the 11th International Conference on Environment Pollution and Prevention (ICEPP) 2023 in Brisbane, Australia in November.
  • Level Masters team - Ritik Yelekar (MS by Research, ECE); Thomas David Tency (Researcher and CEO, Hydrow); Nagesh Walchatwar (Research Intern, SPCRC) and Sahil Padole (Research Intern, SPCRC) supervised by Dr. Sachin Sachin Chaudhari secured the 2nd runner-up position for their project on IoT-based Smart Water Level Monitoring at the Environment Sensing Project Competition (ESPC-2023) organised by the University of Helsinki, Finland.
  • IIIT Hyderabad basketball boys team were runner-up at the intercollegiate tournament held at Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology (VNRVJIET). The team members were Janardan, Ashwin Rudraraju, Revanth Kumar Gundam, Aniketh Atmakuri, Aadarsh Ragunathan, Pradeep Kr Pal, Atharv Johar, Samson Xavier and coach Mr. Samson Xavier.
  • Team members G Krishna Sandilya, M.Tech-PDM 2nd year; Param Dubey, M.Tech-PDM 2nd year and G L Vaishnavi, M.Tech-PDM 1st year were national finalists at Tech-Tack product case competition for a live business case held online from 21 October to 2 November at XLRI, Jamshedpur.
  • Sajja Patel, a UG3 student currently pursuing B.Tech-CSE recently gained admission into IIT Guwahati's Data Science and AI program through JEE advanced mode.
  • Rishikesh Bose, MS by research supervised by Dr. Sachin Chaudhari received the best presentation award for their research work on Comparative Analysis of Construction-Related Air Pollution in Indoor and Outdoor Environments at the 11th International Conference on Environment Pollution and Prevention (ICEPP-2023) held from 10 -11 November at Brisbane, Australia.
  • The Annual Awards Function where the academic and research successes of students are recognised was held on 15 November at institute amphitheatre. This year nearly 500 students have been recognized for their academic/research achievements.
  • Research work on Unsupervised approach to evaluate sentence-level fluency: Do we really need reference? By Dr. Manish Shrivastava and his students Gopichand Kanumolu, MS CSE; Lokesh Madasu, MS CSE; Pavan Baswani, MS CSE and Ananya Mukherjee, Ph.D CSE was given the Best paper award in SEALP2023 Workshop at IJCNLP-AACL 2023 held on Bali, Indonesia on 1 November.
  • Shambhavi Ojha, M.Tech Product Design and Management student bagged the silver award in the 7th mini product challenge organised by Airtribe. The challenge required participants to create a referral program for the mindfulness app Calm. Shambhavi’s proposal was Calm Connections which she submitted the program outline alongwith mockup screens and promotion idea.
  • Anuj Malviya and Josh Elias Joy, M.Tech Product Design and Management and Akshay Phate M.Tech CSE student who graduated in 2023 won 2nd place in Autodesk Instructables, Student Game Design Challenge, for their project Jumpfit (Wearable Joystick) which was done as a part of the Wearables System Design Course at IIIT Hyderabad under the mentorship of Dr. Raghu Reddy.
  • Astitva Srivastava in first year and Chennupati Sai Deep in third year of their Ph.D in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) were awarded TCS Research Scholarships. Students selected for the scholarship will be given a stipend for a maximum of four years, or submission of a thesis whichever is earlier. A stipend of Rs. 70,000 per month for the first and second year and Rs. 75,000 per month for the third year and fourth year will be given to the Ph.D scholars.
  • Priyanka Kommagoun working under Prof. Anil Kumar Vuppala, from the Speech Processing Lab, LTRC won the best poster award in Young Female Researchers in Speech Science and Technology Workshop (YFRSW-2023) as part of INTERSPEECH 2023 held in Dublin, Ireland on 19 August. The poster was on research work done on Unravelling Speech Disfluencies: A Novel Approach to Distinguishing Typical and Atypical Stuttering Patterns by Priyanka Kommagouni, Narasinga Vamshi Raghu Simha, Anil Kumar Vuppala.
  • Dr. Manish Shrivastava and Srija M, 3rd year CLD student were team leaders for the Indian contingent consisting of Faraz Ahmed Siddique, Anshul Bhagwat, Saumya Goyal, and Ujaan Rakshit at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL-2023): Celebrating Language Prowess and Problem Solvers held at Bansko, Bulgaria from 23 to 29 July.
  • M Satish Kumar supervised by Dr. Shaik Rehana, has been awarded the esteemed Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) travel grant. This award helped him to participate in the distinguished International Conference – Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) 2023, held in Singapore from 30 July – 4 August.
  • Team BlueBird members Shambavi, Anuj, Aniket, VenkatSai, Gopi (M.Tech PDM) and Dhiraj (MS SERC) won the Silver Award at the prestigious London Design Awards 2023 in the Service Design category. They designed a solution to enhance the well-being of patients and families navigating the challenging journey of terminal illness.
  • IIITH students M Rajesh, M Satish Kumar and T Thomas David won first place for their low-cost IoT-based sensor for effective water management in Telangana State Pollution Control Board’s hackathon.
  • IIITH’s Smart City Living Lab team won the best user application award in the Korean Hackathon. Team was led by Leo J Francis along with Vaibhav Naware, Ushasri Mogadali, Gaurav and Sasidhar Varada.
  • Ankit Gangwal and his students Shubham Singh and Abhijeet Srivastava were awarded the best paper award for their research work on AutoSpill: Credential Leakage from Mobile Password Managers at Proceedings of the 13th ACM Conference on Data and Application Security and Privacy (ACM CODASPY 2023) held at Charlotte, USA from 24 - 26 April.
  • Arpan Singh, a third year MS by Research student in Civil Engineering, working under the supervision of Dr. Sunitha Palissery has been offered Ph.D admissions at the Department of Civil Engineering in the Meguro-Numada Laboratory at the University of Tokyo (UTokyo), beginning in the fall of 2023. He has been selected as one of the 8 international candidates for the MEXT scholarship of the Japanese government through a highly competitive screening process.
  • Deepthi Amuru, a Ph.D student working under the supervision of Dr. Zia Abbas received an award at the Woman Leaders Forum (WLF-2023) on 31 May at Hotel Crowne Plaza, Dubai under the category Award for Contribution at International Level.
  • Aditya Agarwal and Bipasha Sen, 2nd year MS by Research students in Computer Science working under the supervision of Prof. C V Jawahar and Prof. Vinay Namboodiri, University of Bath, UK have been offered Ph.D admissions to the highly competitive EECS program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) this fall 2023.
  • IIITH’s Team FLogic comprising of Amul Agrawal, Alapan Chaudhuri, and Aditya Verma beat nearly 1,500 teams from over 250 colleges at the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC).
  • Anis Fatema, a Ph.D scholar working under the supervision of Dr. Aftab Hussain at the Center for VLSI and Embedded Systems Technology (CVEST) won second prize at Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR- 2022) under the Ph.D category for her popular science story on Breaking the Walls of Chronic Back Pain. The prize carried a cash prize of Rs 50,000.
  • Ihita G was invited by Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to co-chair a session on Diversity 4 Tech Young Leaders Focus Session during the Mobile World Congress (MWC-2023) held at Barcelona, Spain from 27 February to 2 March.
  • The Music Club won prizes for the following events/competitions at the cultural event of NIFT Spectrum-23 - First place in Battle of Bands – Ants; Second place in Oggy and the Penguins; First place in Duet Singing and First place in Duet Improv (skit)
  • Fourth-year students, Sriram Devata and Kanakala Ganesh Chandan, won the first and second prizes respectively. Rohit Modee, a Ph.D scholar was also awarded for methodology for innovative usage of ML irrespective of performance of the framework used. Sandeep Nagar, a Ph.D student, was also awarded for the best team name at a conference on Machine Learning for Molecular Sciences (ML4SCIENCE 2023), was held at Germanus Springs Resort at Kodaikanal from 9 – 12 March.
  • Team Vayu, consisting of Nitin Nilesh (MS, CSE); Sara Spandhana (MS, ECE); Om Kathalkar and Shreyas Gujar (Interns, College Research Affiliate Program - IoT) from SPCRC and SCRC won the Environment Sensing Project Competition (2022) while team AirIoT comprising Ayu Parmar (MS, ECE); Nitin Nilesh (MS, CSE) and Ritik Yelekar (Intern, College Research Affiliate Program - IoT) from SPCRC and SCRC, made it to the short-list. The event was organized by the MegaSense team, University of Helsinki.
  • IIITH students won medals in Table tennis (Women), Chess (Men) and Swimming (Women) at BITS Arena Sports Fest - 2023 held at BITS Hyderabad on 5 February.
  • Devika Bej, UG1-CSD was one of the top 20 winners in the 17 – 18 age category at the Desmos Global Art Contest held online from mid November 2022 to mid January 2023. Devika Bej was also the only entry from India to be chosen in the top 20 across all age categories.
  • The Team Tateists of Astronomy Club won the first prize in an inter-college Astronomy competition organised by IIT Patna. The competition had three rounds – a quiz, a SpaceX simulator challenge to dock a shuttle to the ISS, and a challenge to identify habitable exoplanets from a database of 10,000 exoplanets. The team members Shreyas Badami, UG2-CND and Pranav Agrawal, UG2-CSE topped all the rounds of the competition and finished with a perfect score in the final round.
  • Team Blue Bird comprising Aniket Chandekar, Anuj Malviya, Dhiraj Shanmukha, Shambhavi Ojha, Vinaya Gopi and Venkat Sai from M.Tech Product Design and Management and SERC qualified as top 20 teams globally out of 90+ teams that participated in the Student Service Design Challenge 2023, an international competition that encourages students to design services that promote both personal well-being and collective happiness.
  • Anis Fatema, Ph.D student working under the supervision of Dr. Aftab Hussain received the Best women-owned business pitch and Best overall pitch award at the WiSe-YP Big Idea Pitch Competition and a prize money of $400 at the IEEE Applied Sensors Conference 2023 (IEEE APSCON 2023) held at Bengaluru on 24 January.
  • G V Ihita, MS student in SPCRC working on IoT security for smart cities under the guidance of Dr. Sachin Chaudhari, was selected as a representative of the Indian delegation and the Generation Connect initiative to attend United Nations agency International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-D Study Group-2 meeting at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5 - 9 December 2022.
  • Mallela Jhansi, a 2nd-year Ph.D student working under the supervision of  Dr. Chiranjeevi Yarra was selected for Research Week with Google 2023, organised by Google Research India  from 29 - 31 January  in Bangalore.
  • Research work by Dr. Nita Parekh and her students were awarded first prizes for their oral presentation at the 3rd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Data Science (ICBDS - 2022), held from 22 - 23 December at Bengaluru, for their research work on:
    • Comparative Analysis of SARS-CoV-2 Variants Across Three Waves in India - Dr. Nita Parekh and her student Kushagra Agarwal.

  • Dr. P Pravin K V Rao has been selected for ISET D K Paul Research Award for best Ph.D thesis in Earthquake Risk Reduction in India for the year 2022. The award is given once in 4 years to only one person with an international reputation and excellent standing in the area of expertise. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 60,000 and a citation.

Google has awarded the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad an unrestricted gift money which will support follow-up research of Dr. Ravi Kiran Sarvadevabhatla in collaboration with Pradeep Shenoy, Google Research on multi-object multi-part segmentation and visual scene understanding.
  • Prof. R Pradeep Kumar was awarded the Outstanding Concrete Engineer of Telangana 2021 by Indian Concrete Institute. This award is given annually for outstanding contribution in the field of concrete technology, promotion of concrete structures, research in concrete and more.
  • Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru has been awarded the Flipkart Faculty Award for his work on security. The award includes a cash grant which he is utilizing for further research on fraud detection along with some of his students.
  • MeitY project fund for research work on Blockchain and Machine Learning Powered Unified Video Know Your Customer Framework has been granted to Dr. Ankit Gangwal (PI), Dr. Sudipta Banerjee (Co-PI), Dr. Anoop M. Namboodiri (Co-PI), and Dr. Kishore Kothapalli (Co-PI) by MeitY, Government of India from 2022 – 2024. It is a joint project with Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) Hyderabad and IIT Bhilai. Total budget sanctioned is Rs 23.72 Crore.
  • Dr. Vinoo Alluri was featured in the fifth edition of The Life of Science’s (TLoS) yearly desktop calendar. It featured 48 Indian women, transgender and non-binary persons working in various fields of science during 2022 – 2023. The calendar was launched on 11 February to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Dr. Alluri was featured under the theme Music.
  • Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru has been featured in Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) as part of their People of ACM initiative. Prof. Kumaraguru is an ACM Distinguished Member for outstanding engineering contributions to computing. He is also an ACM India Eminent Speaker and an ACM Distinguished Speaker.

  • Naga Manoj Makkena, M.S Dual Degree-ECE, working under supervision of Dr. Ubaidulla P received the best paper award for their research work on Trajectory and power optimization for buffer assisted amplify-and-forward UAV relay at the 11th international conference on Communications, Networks and Satellites (COMNETSAT-2022) at Solo, Indonesian island of Java from 3 - 5 November.
  • Shri Vidhatri M M, UG4, CND working under the supervision of Dr. Tapan Kumar Sau participated in UNLEASH 2022 conducted at Infosys campus, Mysore from 3 - 11 December. The team of Shri Vidhatri was one of the top 7 finalists among all the teams participating in the innovation lab.
  • VidyutVanika22 was the winner with a normalized score 75% and became the only second broker to win the PowerTAC tournament in two consecutive years. The team members were Dr. Praveen Paruchuri and Dr. Sujit Gujar from IIITH, Dr. Easwar Subramanian and Dr. Sanjay Bhat from TCS and Sanjay Chandlekar was the lead student from IIITH.
  • IIITH researchers Jaidev Shriram, B.Tech student; Dr. Makarand Tapaswi and Dr.Vinoo Alluri created a music algorithm that curates and plays appropriate background music as you read books. The research team took the soundtrack from the Harry Potter movie and aptly juxtaposed it with the novel. This independent project walked away with the prestigious Brave New Idea Award at the 23rd International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR-2022) held in Bengaluru from 4 - 8 December.
  • Research work on Overcoming Label Noise for Source-free Unsupervised Video Domain Adaptation by Avijit Dasgupta; Prof. C V Jawahar and Karteek Alahari (Inria) was awardedthe Best paper award - Runner up at the Indian Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics and Image Processing (ICVGIP-2022) held at IIT Gandhinagar from 8 - 10 December.
  • Research work on Interpreting Intrinsic Image Decomposition using Concept Activations by Avani Gupta; Saurabh Saini and Prof. P J Narayanan was awarded the Best paper award at the Indian Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics and Image Processing (ICVGIP-2022) held at IIT Gandhinagar from 8 - 10 December.
  • A team from Electronics and Robotics Club (ERC) was the second runner-up in the Home Automation Event organized by Atomberg Technologies at Techfest, IIT Bombay from 16 to 18 December. Team members were Rishabh Agrawal, Aditya Sehgal, Tadimarri Desika Sreeharsha and Akshit Gureja (all UG3 - UG2k20).
  • Durga Prasad Dhulipudi working in Honeywell and a part time Ph.D student of Dr. K S Rajan was awarded the best paper award for his research work on Machine Learning for Multiclass Geospatial Objects—Need for Accelerated Mapping of Airports at the ISRS-ISG National Symposium held at HICC Hyderabad from 15 - 17 November.
  • Aniket Chandekar and Anuj Malviya pursuing M.Tech in Product Design and Management (PDM) were finalists at the Salesforce Design Challenge held on a national scale with students from prestigious design colleges like NID Bengaluru, IIIT Delhi, MITID Pune, and ISDI Mumbai.
  • Machine Learning Lab students Shailey Mishra and Manisha Padala working under the supervision of Dr. Sujit Prakash Gujar received the First runner-up best paper award for their research work on Fairness with Special Externalities at the 19th Pacific Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (PRICAI-2022) held from 10 to 13 November at Shanghai, China.
  • Research work on Does Audio Help in Deep Audio Visual Saliency Prediction Models by Dr. Vineet Gandhi and his students - Ritivik Agarwal, Shreyank Jyoti, Rohit Girmaji and Sarath Sivaprasd received the best student paper award at the 24th ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI 2022) held from 7 - 11 November at Bangalore.
  • Advaita Saxena, PhD in ECE and Pragati Gupta, PhD in CSE under the supervision of Dr. Kavita Vemuri, CogSci were awarded the prestigious Kohli Research Fellowship Program, a competitive Fellowship program for pursuing PhD under the Kohli Center on Intelligent Systems (KCIS) for the Academic Year 2022-23.

  • Poorna Chandra Danamaraju, M.Tech in Product Design and Management course was invited as a guest of honor at the Literature Conclave held at his alma mater – DAV Public School, Hyderabad on 24 August. His book Earthly Realm was launched by his excellency, Mr. Syed Mohammed Ibrahimkhil, the acting consul general of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan during the Literature Conclave.
  • Josh Elias Joy, 2nd semester student of M.Tech Product design and Management, won the Odd Inputs and Peculiar Peripherals contest conducted by Hackaday and partnered with Digi-Key Electronics. There were a total of 75 participants from all over the world. In this contest, participants were encouraged to make the strangest, fanciest, flashiest, or most custom computer peripherals, and share that work.
  • Vivek Mathur, UG3-CND, working under the supervision of Dr. Tapan Kumar Sau participated in the Summer Research Fellowship program from June - August organized jointly by The Indian National Science Academy (INSA), The Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) and The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). The program was onsite at IIT Delhi, Laboratory of Electronic Materials with Dr. Nirat Ray, Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering. He was selected in the "Engineering including Computer Sciences" category.
  • Shri Vidhatri M M, UG4, CND received the best paper award in the Sensors and Measurements section for her work on Development of sensor for monitoring the integrity of lubrication system of heavy duty pumps in nuclear reactors at the 2nd IEEE International Conference on Emerging Frontiers in Electrical and Electronic Technologies (ICEFEET 2022) in NIT Patna from 24 - 25 June.
  • Research work on Bringing Linearly Transformed Cosines to Anisotropic GGX by Aakash K T under the supervision of Prof. P J Narayanan received the best paper award at ACM SIGGRAPH Symposium on Interactive 3D Graphics and Games (I3D), 2022.
  • Kumar Neelabh, working under the supervision of Dr. Vishnu Sreekumar, has been selected for the Mathematical Methods in Computational Neuroscience Summer School to be held at Eresfjord, Norway from 20 July to 5 August organised by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
  • Pranay Gupta and Debtanu Gupta under the mentorship of Dr. Ravi Kiran Sarvadevabhatla were super winners of this year’s edition of the prestigious Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QIF) award for their innovative proposal – Deep Neural Models for Generalized Synthesis of Multi-avatar Actions in the domain of Multimedia Computing. Harshithanjani Athi and Rasagna Chigullapally under the mentorship of Dr. Lalitha Vadlamani and Dr. Prasad Krishnan were winners of this year’s edition of the prestigious Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QIF) award for their innovative proposal – List Decoding Reed-Solomon and Locally Repairable Codes: How far can we go? in the domain of Advances in Communication Techniques and Theory.
  • Team Cerebrus, Robotics Research Center (RRC) secured second place at the ARTPARK Robotics Challenge conducted by IISc Bangalore’s Innovation Hub. IIITH team Cerebrus was led by Suraj Bonagiri, PhD scholar as well as founder of a drone startup, Arka Aerospace, and included Vedant Mundheda, Karan Mirakhor, Rahul Kashyap, Sreeharsha Paruhuri and Karnik Ram.

  • Dr. Nazia Akhtar received a special commendation from the jury of the Jawad Memorial Prize for Urdu-English Translation. Nazia translated the Urdu short story Chhottam Jaan written by Zeenath Sajida. In 2017, Nazia was awarded a New India Foundation fellowship to write a book on Urdu prose by Hyderabadi women.
  • Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru has been named a Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world's largest and most prestigious society of computing professionals.

  • Research paper on Design and Implementation of 0.23 nJ/bit Reference-Spur-Free FSK/OOK Transmitter at 400 MHz for Wearable Health Monitoring by Dr. Abhishek Srivastava, Dr. Devarshi Das, IIT Ropar and Dr. M Shojaei Baghini, IIT Bombay has been selected as one of the top contributions at IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS-2021) held in Berlin, Germany from 6 – 9 October. The authors have been invited to submit this paper in a special edition of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems (TBioCAS). The selection of paper as one of the top contributions is usually equivalent to the Best Paper Award. The authors were not allowed to participate in the best paper award category as all the authors were professors.

  • Prof. Deva Priyakumar received the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Bronze Medal from the president of CSRI at the 27th CRSI National Symposium in Chemistry organized by Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata from 26 - 30 September. He received this award for his significant contributions in computational chemistry to study reaction mechanisms and biological interactions.
  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das is in the 10,000 Club of Google Scholar Citations. His Google Scholar h-index is 59 and i10-index is 171 with over 10,000 citations. Dr. Das has also been included in the top 2% of scientists world-wide in all fields and in the area of Networking & Telecommunications he has been ranked 321 in the world subject area for the year 2021.       • An extensive article by Rishabh B Mishra, Center for VLSI and Embedded Systems Technology (CVEST) on Solar Powered Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: A Review was published in the journal - Energy Technology and also got accepted as the cover article of the journal which reflects that the topic which was covered is highly interesting to editors of the journal and it’s quite unique as well.

      • An international oneM2M hackathon organised by Korea Electronics Technology Institute to commemorate its 30th anniversary saw IIITH walk away with the Best User Application award.

      • Research work on A BIM Based Approach of Electrical Network Analysis and Applications Using GIS Tools by Prof. K S Rajan, Dr. Nagaraja Ravoori Tejaswini Venkumahanti, Kesava Rao Pyla and Sinha S K was given Best Paper Award at 2nd International virtual conference on Sustainable Construction Technologies and Advancements in Civil Engineering (ScTACE 2021), Bhimavaram from 14 - 16 October.
      • IIIT team tesla_protocol ranked 46 at the ACM-ICPC competition for 2020. tesla_protocol, made up of Sai Anurudh Peduri, Arjun Pitchanathan and Devansh Gautam was ahead of teams from Stanford, Virginia Tech, Purdue, etc. After a years delay due to Covid-19 pandemic, the ACM-ICPC- 2020 competition officially concluded on 6 October at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. More than 50,000 students, from more than 3000 universities from 111 countries participated in local and regional events.

      • Manisha Padala and Sankrshan Damle, Ph.D students working under the guidance of Dr. Sujit Gujar received Best Paper Award at the first Indian conference on (DAI) organized by Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and AI, IIT Madras from 16 – 18 June for their work on Building Ethical AI: Federated Learning Meets Fairness and Differential Privacy. Manisha Padala and Sankrshan Damle were given a cash prize of USD 500.

      • A team comprising of students Pranay Gupta and Debtanu Gupta under the mentorship of Dr. Ravi Kiran Sarvadevabhatla has won this year’s edition of the prestigious Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship award for their innovative proposal titled “Deep Neural Models For Generalized Synthesis of Multi-avatar Actions.

      • Research work by Aditya Srinivas Gear, Kritika Prakash, Nonidh Singh and Dr Praveen Paruchuri on PredictRV: A Prediction Based Strategy for Negotiations with Dynamically Changing Reservation Value has been accepted and also has been nominated for the best student paper at the 21st International Conference on Group Decision and Negotiation (GDN 2021).
      • Anurag Jain working under the supervision of Dr. Sujit Gujar received the best poster design award for their work on We might walk together, but I run faster: Network Fairness and Scalability in Blockchains at the Proceedings of International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems, 2021 (AAMAS'21).

      • Maheshwari Himanshu and Bhavyajeet Singh working under the supervision of Prof. Vasudeva Varma participated in a 3C shared task at Second Workshop on Scholarly Document Processing @ NAACL 2021. The shared task focuses on classifying citation context in research publications based on their influence and purpose. It consisted of two subtasks. The model proposed by Maheshwari Himanshu and Bhavyajeet Singh was ranked number 1 for Subtask A and their macro F1 score was 0.26973. For Subtask B they were ranked number 2 and their macro F1 score is 0.59071 which is very close to the top team's macro F1 score 0.60025.

      • Research work on Recent Progress on Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors: From Design and Materials to Applications by Rishabh B. Mishra working under the supervision of Aftab M.   • Prof. P Krishna Reddy was Steering Committee Chair and Publication Chair at the Seventh International Conference on Big Data Analytics (BDA 2019) from 17 - 20 December at Ahmedabad University.
  • Research work of Vinoo Alluri and her student D Niranjan on Dynamic Functional Connectivity in the Musical Brain was awarded best paper at the 12th International Conference on Brain Informatics - Brain Science meets Artificial Intelligence, Hainan, China from 13 - 15 December
  • Prof. Vishal Garg and his students received US patent rights for their research work on System and apparatus for and methods of control of localized energy use in a building using price set points. This patent is a joint application between IIITH and LBNL under the CBERD project (a five year Indo-US bilateral R&D project).
  • Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru (PK), Computer Science Department, IIIT Delhi created Prof. Rajeev Sangal Faculty Fellowship for fellow faculty members. It will be awarded each year to a faculty member having a wholesome impact on students.
  • Sunil Lohar, Lecturer and a Ph.D student of CEH, IIIT- Hyderabad completed his six weeks artist residency program at Bordeaux Metropole, France. The program was closely related to Sunil Lohar’s Ph.D work and provided him the opportunity to interact with several international scholars of Arts and Aesthetics. He visited many museums and art galleries in France during his residency program to view original artworks of great artists. Every year, only one Indian artist gets a chance to be a part of this prestigious artist residency program in Bordeaux Metropole, France. Sunil is also a recipient of the Telangana State Award for painting at the Kalanand art contest 2019.
  • Prof. Vishal Garg have been elevated as a Fellow of the international society - IBPSA, International Building Performance Simulation Association at the biannual conference in Rome from 2 - 4 September. Prof. Vishal Garg and Prof. Jyotirmay Mathur from MNIT Jaipur are the first Indian’s to receive this honour.
  • Dr. Vinoo Alluri wrote a book chapter on Neural Correlates of Timbre Processing in Timbre: Acoustics, Perception, and Cognition published by Springer. The other author of this book chapter is Sudarsana Reddy Kadiri (currently doing postdoc in Helsinki, P.hD from IIITH)

  • Dr. Priyanka Srivastava and her team – Anurag Rimzhim (CCSU, US), Palash Vijay (IIITH), Shruti Singh (IIITH), Sushil Chandra (INMAS, DRDO, New Delhi)  presented a paper on Desktop VR is better than Non-ambulatory HMD VR for spatial learning at EuroVR 2017, Laval, France from 12 – 17 December. Their paper was awarded one of the best papers from Euro VR 2017 in a peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI (2018) in July 2019.

  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das is one of the guest editors in the special issue on Blockchain Technologies and Applications for 5G Enabled IoT in ICT Express (Elsevier) journal.
  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das is one of the program committee chairs for the International Congress on Blockchain and Applications (BLOCKCHAIN'19), Avila, Spain from 26 - 28 June. This annual congress brings together blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) researchers, who share ideas, projects, lectures, and advances associated with those technologies and their application domains.   • Dr. Lalitha Vadlamani and Aaditya M Nair won first runner-up best paper award at National Conference on Communications (NCC 2019) for their research on Maximally Recoverable Codes with Hierarchical Locality at the Silver Jubilee edition of National Conference on Communications (NCC 2019) from 20 – 23 February held at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
  • Dr. Sachin Chaudhari has been elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. IEEE Senior member is awarded to engineer, scientists, educators, technical executives, or originators in IEEE-designated field with experience reflecting professional maturity and have been in professional practice for at least ten years (with some credit for certain degrees). In order to be promoted to Senior Member, they also have to show significant performance over a period of at least five of their years in professional practice
  • Dr. Ashok Kumar Das has been appointed as an Associate Editor of IET Communications journal for a three-year term from February 2019 – 2022. The journal, in publication since 1980, is a prestigious SCI-indexed journal.
  • Dr. Radha Rangarajan, Head, Innovation and Strategy – OJAS MedTech BioNEST won the FICCI Award of Excellence – Women in R&D under the DST FICCI Global R&D Summit 2019. The award is given for outstanding R&D happening in the country across industry, academia and research establishments from the public and private sector. With the award, FICCI hopes to motivate corporates, academic institutions, government laboratories and professionals working in research and development across various sectoral domains.
  • Dr. Nimmi Rangaswamy has been inducted into the board of advisors for United Nations University – Institute of computing society. The United Nations University Institute on Computing and Society is an institute of the United Nations University (UNU), located in São Lázaro, Macau, China. Established in 2015, UNU-CS serves as a bridge between the UN and international academic and public policy communities, training the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists in computing, social sciences and design for international development.
  • Prof. P Krishna Reddy has been appointed as a member of executive committee, Indian Society of Agricultural Information Technology (INSAIT), from October 2018.
  • Prof. Vasudeva Varma and his team came second at the CL-Aff Shared Task for their poster on  Ingredients for Happiness: Modeling constructs via semi-supervised content driven inductive transfer at the AAAI-19 Workshop on Affective Content Analysis (AFFCON 2019) - Modeling Affect-in-Action at Hilton Hawaiian Village, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA from  27 January to 1 February. The authors of this paper are Bakhtiyar Syed, Vijayasaradhi Indurthi, Kulin Shah, Manish Gupta and Vasudeva Varma.
  • Dr. Abhishek Srivastava won the best paper award for his research on Analysis and Design of Low Phase Noise LC Oscillator for Sub-mW PLL-free Biomedical Receivers at the 32nd International Conference on VLSI Design and 18th International Conference on Embedded systems (VLSID 2019) from 5 - 9 January at Manekshaw Center, New Delhi.

        • Utkarsh Azad, Center for Computational Natural Sciences and Bioinformatics (CCNSB) received the best paper award for his research on Noise Analysis of Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm on Weighted Max-Cut in Computer and Software Systems track at the 3rd IEEE Conference on Information and Communication Technology (CICT-2019).
        • Tanashree Jaganade (Ph.D in Bioinformatics, student of Dr. Deva Priyakumar) received the first best poster award for her work on Unravelling dynamics and energetic events involved in flipping process of Thymine Glycol lesion using computational approaches at Australasia's premier Molecular Modelling (MM) conference which was held on Bintan Island, Indonesia from 5 - 8 December. She also received Bursary Award as a fellowship from the organising committee of the conference. The conference was organised by the Association of Molecular Modellers of Australasia (AMMA).
        • PEC Coach P Shiva Shalini has been selected to be a part of the Osmania University women’s hockey team. She participated in the South Zone Inter University Hockey Tournament in Chennai last month. Interestingly, Shalini learnt to play hockey at IIITH campus.
        • IIITH students won first place in the first round of Microsoft CodeFunDo hackathon 2019. Microsoft CodeFunDo hackathon is held every year by Microsoft in a few institutes like IIIT Hyderabad, IITs and BITS. The first round is held at the college level where participants compete with other teams from their college. IIITH team -Greenticks will represent IIIT Hyderabad in the National Round competing against all other winning teams from their respective colleges. As a prize for the first place, IIITH students won Rs. 20,000 per participant and have qualified for the National Round which will be early next year.         • Venkata Appa Rao Yempada, Research Scholar, Center for VLSI and Embedded Systems Technology (CVEST) working under the supervision of Dr. Srivatsava Jandhyala, was awarded the best poster award for his work on Simulation study of III-V Lateral Tunnel FETs with Gate-Drain underlap at the 23rd International symposium on VLSI Design and Test (VDAT) at IIT Indore from 4 - 6 July.
        • Divija Swetha Gadiraju, Ph.D student of SPCRC working under the supervision of Dr. Lalitha Vadlamani, has been awarded Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship India 2019 for their proposal - Codes for distributed computing and sharding.The participating institutes included 9 IITs, IISc as well as IIIT Hyderabad. Out of 28 finalist teams, 10 winning teams were awarded the fellowship. Each winning team will receive 10 lakhs INR fellowship and mentorship from Qualcomm engineers.
      • Mihir Bani (CND, 1st Year) and Mukund Choudhary (CLD, 2nd Year) have been selected to represent IIITH in the National Level Quiz - Lallantop Quiz 2019, organized by the India Today Group.
      • Aditya Kumar (2nd year BTech, CSE) has been selected as a Campus Director for the 2020 Hult Prize on Campus Program at IIIT Hyderabad. In partnership with the United Nations, the Hult Prize is hosting college and university events around the world in search of the next game-changing start-up.
      • Sreeja Kamishetty working under the supervision of Praveen Paruchuri has been selected for the Google Venkat Panchapakesan Memorial Scholarship. Every year Google offers the Venkat Memorial Scholarship to 6 students from India pursuing Computer Science or a closely related field. Selected students receive a financial award of 750 USD towards tuition and education related expenses, and will be invited to visit the YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, USA. Selected students will also have an opportunity to submit a proposal, and potentially receive a funding of up to 225 USD to spend on growing computer science in the local community.

    • Dr. Ravi Kiran S and Yashaswi Verma were awarded the IUPRAI (Indian Unit of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence) – Best Doctoral Dissertation Award during the ICVGIP 2018 Conference held from 18 – 22 December at IIIT-Hyderabad. The awardees were given a citation and a cash prize for their achievement. The dissertation topic of Dr. Ravi Kiran S was Deep learning for hand-drawn sketches: Analysis, synthesis and cognitive process models.
    • Prof. C V Jawahar, has been elected a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers (INAE) with effect from November 2018.
    • Prof. Vishal Garg received the Arthur H Rosenfeld Urban Cooling Award from the Global Cool Cities Alliance in California, USA. The Global Cool Cities Alliance (GCCA) has established an award to honor the legacy and impact of Dr. Arthur Rosenfeld’s advocacy for cooler buildings, cooler cities, and a cooler planet. Dr. Rosenfeld was a founder of GCCA and a tireless advocate for building materials that improve thermal comfort and make a positive impact on global climate change.
    • Dr. K S Rajan has been invited to be the Associate Editor of Journal of Indian Society of Remote Sensing (JISRS). It is the premier publication of the Society and has been in publication since 1973. Over the last decade, it became an international journal with Springer publishing and distributing it world over.

He will be its Executive Council Member from 1 July 2018 - 30 June 2022.
    • Samyak Datta, Gaurav Sharma and Prof. C V Jawahar, Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT) were conferred Best Paper Award for their paper Unsupervised Learning of Face Representations at 13th IEEE International Conference on Automated Face and Gesture Recognition (FG 2018), Xi'an, China during 15 - 19 May.
    • Dr. Jolly Thomas, Center for Exact Humanities (CEH) won the BM Matilal Logic prize for the year 2018. This prize is awarded biennially.
    • Dr. Anoop Namboodiri, Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT) won the Best Paper Award (Silver) for his work on Semi-Adversarial Networks: Convolutional Autoencoders for Imparting Privacy to Face Images at the 11th IAPR International Conference on Biometrics (ICB 2018), Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

      • Tarnpreet Gill, (M.Tech Students of CASE, EERC) won the Best Paper Presentation Award in the general track category for his paper on Age Detection of Moon Minerals Using Crater Counting Techniques at FOSS4G-ASIA - 2018 Conference at University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka from 2 - 5 December
      • 1st Year UG Student Mukund Choudhary is one of  the top 20 finalists selected through a rigorous 2-stage jury process among 470 submissions from 60 countries to attend  the prestigious 10th Global Peter Drucker forum in Vienna from 29 - 30 November. He also received travel funding to attend the award ceremony.
      • Team VidyutVanika, a collaborative team between TCS and IIITH came second in the PowerTac 2018 competition. The team consisted of Susobhan Ghosh (student), Dr. Sujit Gujar, Dr. Praveen Paruchuri from IIIT-Hyderabad and Dr. Easwar Subramanian, Dr. Sanjay Bhat from TCS.
      • Salghuna Nair, Ph.D student working under the supervision of Dr. Ramachandra Prasad P. Earthquake Engineering Research Center (EERC), Lab for Spatial Informatics (LSI) won the best paper and best contribution among young researchers for their paper A surrogate approach of identifying Artocarpus heterophyllus species of Attappadi forest, India at the AIT2018 - the IX Conference of the Italian Society of Remote Sensing, Florence,Italy during 4 - 6 July. Salghuna received 300 Euros as prize money.
      • Mayank Agrawal’s research under the supervision of Dr. Kavita Vemuri, Cognitive Science Lab (CogSci) and Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) was awarded the Best Poster Award for his work on A Heterogeneous traffic virtual-reality simulator to study irritation/anger and driving behaviour under adverse conditions at the 32nd British Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Conference from 2 - 6 July at Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK.
      • Sreeja Kamishetty, Master of Science student in Computer Science working under the supervision of Dr. Praveen Paruchuri, Data Sciences and Analytics Center (DSAC), Machine Learning Lab (MLL) has been selected for the Google student retreat in London. Google Students Retreat is a three day event for students to connect with each other, develop their skill set and gain unique insights at Google. Google Students Retreat is from 7 - 9 August at Google London Office.
      • Mounika K V won Best Poster Award in 3rd Workshop for Young Female Researchers in Speech Science and Technology, conducted as a part of INTERSPEECH 2018.
      • IIIT-H Team TooWeakTooSlow - Tanuj Khattar (4th year B.Tech - CSE), C. G. Vedant (4th year B.Tech - CSE) and Rajas Vanjape (4th year CSD-Dual Degree) - have qualified for the World Finals of the ACM-ICPC programming competition to be held in Beijing, China on 19 April 2018.
      • Avijit Dasgupta, a second year Ph.D student won the Google India Ph.D. Fellowship for Machine Perception, Speech Technology and Computer Vision. Avijit is pursuing his research in computer vision and machine learning under the joint supervision of Prof. C V Jawahar, IIIT-Hyderabad and Dr. Karteek Alahari, INRIA, France.

            • Praveen Krishnan, Katrik Dutta and C. V. Jawahar won the Nakano best paper award for their paper Word spotting and recognition using deep embedding at DAS. This was the 13th edition of the IAPR International workshop focusing on system-level issues and approaches in document analysis and recognition held at Vienna from 24-27 April.

    • IIIT-H finished Top 18 at the World Finals of the 36th Annual ACM ICPC 2012, Warsaw, Poland (14 – 18 May). Best performance by an Indian team in ICPC history. Only college from India to qualify for the World Finals for the fourth time in a row. ACM ICPC is the world’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious programming contest, and the 2012 edition drew for its first stage over 30,000 participants on more than 7,000 teams, representing around 2,200 universities, in over 85 countries, on six continents.
    • K. Sai Deepak, in the first semester of his PhD program, Center for Visual Information Technologies (CVIT), was selected for 2012 Google PhD Fellowship. He was one of the four to be awarded the fellowship in India. Sai Deepak did Master of Science in Medical Image Analysis at CVIT, under the guidance of Prof. Jayanti Sivaswamy, in 2012.
    • IIIT-H’s Lab for Spatial Informatics (LSI) launched VRGeo, an open-source collaborative technology for mapping geospatial information in India, at Garuda NKN (National Knowledge Networks) Partners Meet, C-DAC, Bengaluru, on July 20, 2012
    • IIIT-H secured World No.3 place at the 10th Annual Trading Agent Competition Supply Chain Management (TAC SCM), in Valencia, Spain, June 4-8, 2012. TAC SCM was designed to capture many of the challenges involved in supporting dynamic supply chain practices. Check IIIT-H team IOTA in final rankings.
    • Music curriculum designed by IIIT-H’s Cultural Advisor Sri. D. V. K. Vasudevan was adopted by the Government of AP’s Education Department for the Jawahar Bal Bhavan. Jawahar Bal Bhavan is a state wide, non formal educational initiative and targets children aged between 5 and 16 years.

    • IIIT-H team won the First Prize at a National Level Techno Symposium for "Aarogyam" a software enabled tool for patient diagnosis.
    • IIIT-H team won the Forth Place at the World Embedded software contest 2010 (WESC 2010), Seoul, South Korea. The work involved the development and demonistation of a virtual gaming environment called Red Eye.
    • Mr. T. J. Devid, Project Co-ordinator, ENTICE and Mr. Kudikala Shravan Kumar have won the coveted Intel India Embedded Challenge 2011 Grand Prize for their projects Solar Powered Crop Harvesting Robot out of 1600 entries.

    • IIIT-H continues to be ranked Number 1globally at the Sphere Online Judge (SPOJ), a highly popular programming site with over 10, 000 users from 120 countries, since April 2009.
    • IIIT-H's team Mission Gaganyaan was ranked World First at CanSat 2010, at Amarillo, Texas, USA, sponsored by NASA. The contest required teams to design and fabricate a satellite capable of being launched and returning back safely. The payload was the egg of a hen, which had to come back intact.
    • Dual degree research students, Language Technologies Research Center (LTRC) won the first and second ranks in the international contest Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD), in the unsupervised machine learning category.
    • The Cloud Computing Group was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the third India Software Engineering Conference (ISEC) 2010, Mysore.
    • IIIT-H represented India in the 34th Annual ACM Programming Contests World Finals, Harbin, China, in Feb 2010.
    • IIIT-H was ranked among the Best 7 Universities in South Asia, in 2009, in terms of Scholarly Papers on the Internet, by Cybermetric Lab, Spain’s largest public research institution. The global survey is conducted once every three years.

    • Ajay Somani and Anshuman Singh (Undergraduate students) were among the top 3 winners, in the three online programming contests conducted between March and May 2009 by codechef.com, a popular Indian programming contest website.
    • IIIT-H team won the National ACM programming contest, Stockholm, Sweden; April 2009).
    • Ashish Mangalampalli (Research student) is one of the twenty exceptional PhD students from all over the world to have been selected to be part of Yahoo!’s Key Scientific Challenges (KSC) Program, and is the only student from India to receive this award, April 2009
    • IIIT-H team qualified for CanSat 2009, which is a NASA sponsored and American Astronautical Society organized international competition that requires participants to design and build, a micro-satellite, and also the team is one of the 14 teams from around the world to qualify for the finals (June 2009). IIIT-H team built a satellite that was launched and descended to ground sending data to the telemetry system.
    • IIIT-H’s VLSI team is one of the three first-prize winners for a research proposal on Power reduction in off-chip buses for block data at the National Level Intel Scholar Program 2008 (in Graduate category; Feb 2009).
    • IIIT-H has been selected by IBM for the IBM Shared University Research (SUR) Award, under which the institute will be supported financially, to set up a Center of Excellence (CoE) on cell and power multi-core architecture, in order to leverage on the institute’s very early research in these areas, (March 2009).

          US Department of Commerce’ agency National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) holds Text Analysis Conference (TAC) every year. TAC was called Document Understanding Conferences (DUC) till 2008.     A Lasting Contribution to the Nation

    • IIIT Hyderabad is  the very first Not-for-Profit Public-Private-Partnership (NPPP) model in the field of IT education in the country.
    • Serves as a role model institution for about 20 new IIITs which were started in the year 2012 across the country. 
    • Since its inception, IIIT Hyderabad has been conducting a two-day Excitement of Research (ExoR) workshop to allow students of local engineering colleges to see how research is conducted, and get an overall view of career opportunities in research.  
    •  IIITH’s annual R&D Showcase demonstrate research and disseminates knowledge to the industry, academia, government, research organizations, and the general public.  
    • IIITH organises annual summer schools in focused domains viz., AI, ML, NLP, DA/DS, and Vision etc., and executive education on AI&ML and Blockchain technologies for industry professionals. 
    • The institute emphasizes applied research in the focused areas and diverse fields, which is a rare convergence of ICTs linked to societal problems - an unprecedented model of the research-focused academic environment. 
    • Sampark, the Indian languages machine translation system developed by a IIITH led consortium, was launched by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, at the international conference WWW 2011, in March 2011. The first edition of the system provided automatic text translation in four Indian language pairs and the next versions  featured a dozen more Indian languages. The consortium consisting of 11 Indian academic institutions has been funded by the Government of India's Department of Information Technology (DIT).
