Aishani Pandey, (B.Tech + MS in CSE) working with Dr. Aniket Alam was awarded the Young Authors Recognition Award for her poster presentation on UnSight: Bridging the Educational Gap for Blind Learners at the 15th ITU Kaleidoscope Academic Conference 2024 held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi from 21 to 23 October. The other authors of this paper are Arush Sachdeva, (B.Tech-3rd year-LCD working with Dr. Anirban Dasgupta) and Vivek Mathur, ( 5th year-CND working with Dr. Chittaranjan Hens).
Research work on Citation Anchor Text for Improving Precedent Retrieval: An Experimental Study on Indian Legal Documents by Gaurang Patil, Bhoomeendra Singh Sisodiya, K V K Santhy working with Prof. P Krishna Reddy was awarded Best Paper Award at the 37th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems (JURIX-2024) from 11 to 13 December held at Brno, Czech Republic.
Research work on Application of SWMM for Urban Storm Water Management- A Case Study of Hyderabad City by Dr. Shaik Rehana and her Ph.D student Satish Kumar Mummidivarapu was awarded the best paper award at the 3rd International Conference on Advancements in Engineering Education (iCAEED-2024), held in Western Sydney University, Sydney, Australia, from 20 – 23 November.
Rishabh Bhattacharya, a 3rd Year DD Student working Dr. Naresh Manwani won the First Prize in Naval Hackathon 2024, held virtually in October. The theme of his project was Navigation and real-time tracking of flying objects. He received the prize from the Defence Minister of India, Shri Rajnath Singh Ji.
Dr. Shubham Singhal received Best Paper Presentation Award for his research work on Study of Slope Stability Analysis of Hill Slopes with Retaining Walls at the 5th International Conference on Trends & Recent Advances in Civil Engineering (TRACE-2024) held on 15 and 16 October at Amity University, Noida. The other authors of this paper are Ravindra Kumar Tomar, Amity University and Ashish Tamang, 3Powergrid Corporation of India Limited, Mangan.
eSagu system, an IT-based agro-advisory system, developed by IT for Agricultural Research Center, has been mentioned in the report – Of Pioneers and Potentials – Transformation of the Public Sector with GenAI joint initiative by Technical University of Munich (TUM) think tank and Accenture. This is a report on Gen AI in the Public Sector across the globe.
The institute launched the first version of the My IIIT mobile app developed by a team of students on 23 October. The app is designed to offer a user-friendly interface, providing seamless access to key institute resources, particularly the IMS system, without requiring a VPN for students, faculty, and staff. Notably, it also introduces the first digital version of the institute’s faculty and staff contact directory – IIIT Soochika.
Remote Labs project team – Akshit Gureja (UG5 ECD), Vedant Nipane (UG4 ECE), Nagesh Walchatwar (MS 1st year) and Devansh Kantesaria (UG3 ECD) working with Dr. Sachin Chaudhari have won first prize at the Hyderabad regionals of the 5G and 6G hackathon conducted by Telecom Centres of Excellence India (TCOE) India on behalf of Department of Telecommunication (DoT), India at IIIT Hyderabad on 26 – 27 September.
Smart City Living Lab from IIIT Hyderabad has been awarded the Best Education Institute Exhibit of the year at the eighth edition of India Mobile Congress held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, in concurrence with WTSA’24, the governing conference of the ITU Standardization Sector (ITU-T) from 15 – 18 October 2024.
Team India wins at the International Linguistics Olympiad 2024. Competing against 206 participants drawn from 51 teams across 38 countries, the Indian contestants shone at the 21st International Linguistic Olympiad (IOL) held in Brasília, Brazil, from July 23 to July 31, 2024. The Indian team demonstrated their prowess in the individual categories with Animikha Dutta Dhar bagging a silver medal, Shrilakshmi Venkatraman and Faraz Ahmed Siddiqui winning a bronze medal each and Ananya Agarwal receiving an Honourable Mention.

Research on ILAEDA: An Imitation Learning Based Approach for Automatic Exploratory Data Analysis by Dr. Naresh Manwani and his student Abhijit Manatkar was awarded the Best Paper Runners-up Award in the Research Track category at AIML Systems 2024 held at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA from 8 to 11 October.
Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC) faculty – Dr. Sunitha Palissery, Dr. P Pravin Kumar Venkat Rao and Dr. Shubham Singh have been inducted as panel members to the Earthquake Engineering Sectional Committee (EESC) of the Civil Engineering Division (CED-39) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for reviewing the Indian standards related to Earthquake Resistant Design and Construction.

IIIT Undergraduate students along with Dr. Karthik Vaidhyanthan bagged the best poster award at ICSA 2024 held at IIIT Hyderabad from 4 to 8 June 2024. The poster was based on the research work done by Hiya Bhatt, Shrikara A, Adyansh Kakran and Karthik Vaidhyanthan on Towards Architecting Sustainable MLOps: A Self-Adaptation Approach.
Research on Shared-Memory Parallel Algorithms for Community Detection in Dynamic Graphs by Subhajit Sahu working with Prof. Kishore Kothapalli; and Prof. Dip Sankar Banerjee, IIT Jodhpur was awarded the APDCM Outstanding Paper award at 26th Workshop on Advances in Parallel and Distributed Computational Models (APDCM) held from 27 to 30 May at San Francisco, California held in conjunction with 38th IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS 2024).
Prof. Ashok Kumar Das has been appointed as a member of the Experts Review Committee (ERC) in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for technical evaluation of VAIBHAV fellowship proposals by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science & Technology, International Cooperation Division, Government of India, for a term of three years, starting from June 2024.
Prof. K S Rajan is one of the jury members for selecting grand finale winners of Bhartiya Antariksh Hackathon (BAH). The hackathon is being organized as part of National Space Day – 2024 celebrations. Secretary, DOS/Chairman, ISRO launched the BAH programme on 4 July in the area of geospatial domain, space science, image processing and AI/ML. The programme is open for UG, PG and Ph.D students in India.
Dr. Karthik Vaidhyanathan and Dr. Raghu Reddy participated in the esteemed Dagstuhl seminar on Software Architecture and Machine learning in Dagstuhl, Germany from 23 to 28 July. Dagstuhl seminar is regarded as one of the most prestigious, invitation-only workshops and the origin of the DBLP database, Dagstuhl facilitates events that promote intense collaboration among top computer science professionals, steering interdisciplinary progress and defining future trajectories.
The Crop Darpan app, a crop diagnostic tool, which is being developed by researchers at IT for Agricultural Research center (ITARD) headed by Prof. P Krishna Reddy will be used by farmers through the department of agriculture, Telangana. After a lot of field tests and demonstrations for over two years, the department of agriculture Telangana, has taken a decision to encourage farmers to use the Crop Darpan app.
Dr. Abhishek Srivastava’s research group at IC~WiBES Lab, CVEST breaks the barrier! IIITH achieved a significant milestone by successfully designing and fabricating a test chip for the first time in 25 years. The main IC designers are MS students at CVEST — Arpit Sahani, Srayan Sankar Chatterjee, Pranjal Mahajan, Anushka Tripathi, and Deeksha. The process of chip design and tape-out marks a crucial step in transitioning from theoretical designs to a manufacturable product, significantly advancing the institute’s technological capabilities. It’s crucial for bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation, enabling students and researchers to innovate, publish significant findings, and prepare for high-impact careers in the semiconductor industry.
IIIT Hyderabad joins MeitY’s prestigious SMDP chip to startup program in semiconductor domain for the first time since the program started (2005). Project proposal led by Prof. Abhishek Srivastava of CVEST is selected for the prestigious Special Manpower Development Program for Chips to Startup (SMDP C2S) program by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s (MeitY). It is for the first time IIITH has become a part of SMDP in the semiconductor domain since the program started.

IIITH students secured third place for their project on Assessing the Impact of Climate Change on Himalayan Timberline Elevation: Developing a Novel Tool for Analyzing Correlation with Temperature and Precipitation at the first ever Climate and Sustainability Hackathon, hosted by Cloudera in collaboration with AMD. The event was held online from Santa Clara, California. The team members Lokesh Sharma (M.Tech-CSE) and Avantika Latwal (Ph.D-Scholar, Lab for Spatial Informatics), under the supervision of Dr. Rehana Shaik demonstrated outstanding innovation and expertise. The hackathon consisted of an Idea Phase that spanned from 18 October to 27 November 2023 to filter out the ideas. This was followed by a Prototype Submission Phase that occurred online from 29 January to 7 March 2024.

Anis Fatema, PhD student of Dr. Aftab M Hussain won second prize in Young Professionals (YP) session and another second prize in the Student Research Forum Award for Fabrication of Flexible Pressure Sensor Systems for Biomedical Applications at the IEEE APSCON 2024. Both awards carry significant cash prizes and a certificate.
Startup – HydrowVerse Pvt Ltd founded by Dr. Sachin Chaudhari, Signal Processing and Communications Research Center (SPCRC) and Smart City Research Centre(SCRC) and Co-Founded by Thomas David Tency, Research Assistant was awarded the NPCI Best Innovation Award at the event – Fetching Fortunes at E Summit organised by the IIT Hyderabad. The team was given ₹1 Lac worth credits and awards.
Research work on Global Space Modelling Of Biological Processes With Cross-sectional Data by Prof. Jayanthi Sivaswamy and her students – J Thottupattu and Venky P was awarded the best paper nomination award at ICVGIP 2023 – 14th Indian Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing held from 15 – 17 December 2023 at IIT Ropar.
IIIT Hyderabad Basketball team were Runner-up at the intercollegiate tournament held at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Madhapur from 2 to 3 February. Team members were Revanth Gundam, Atharv Johar, Sriram Alluri, Aadarsh Raghunathan, Aniketh Atmakuri, Amogh Tiwari, Ashwin Rudraraju, Sudarshan Nikhil and Janardan. Mr, Samson Xavier was the team coach.
Dr. K S Rajan has been nominated by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare to be one of the lT Advisory committee members towards speedy and systematic implementation of Krishi Decision Support System project to be carved-out from Visualisation of Earth Observation Data and Archival (VEDAS) portal.
IIIT Hyderabad has been ranked number 1 at both, Overall (All India) and in South Zone categories by DataQuest and Cyber Media Research (CMR)’s Best T-School Survey 2023. According to The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings IIIT Hyderabad is in the 601-800 bracket. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 included 1,904 universities across 108 countries and regions. The rankings are based on WUR 3.0 methodology, which included 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.
The 7th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) witnessed a remarkable moment as the Honorable Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi, virtually presented IIIT Hyderabad with the prestigious 5G Lab Award. This recognition marked a significant achievement for the institute, securing its place among the top 100 institutes in India. IIITH is among the three top institutes selected from the state of Telangana.
The National Digital Library of India (NDLI) has recognised IIITH as one of the best performing NDLI clubs in Telangana for its outstanding performance and unwavering dedication in promoting knowledge and learning through the National Digital Library of India. As a token of appreciation and encouragement, NDLI has presented an Appreciation Certificate to IIIT Hyderabad.
The Team Tateists of Astronomy Club won the first prize in an inter-college Astronomy competition organised by IIT Patna. The competition had three rounds – a quiz, a SpaceX simulator challenge to dock a shuttle to the ISS, and a challenge to identify habitable exoplanets from a database of 10,000 exoplanets. The team members Shreyas Badami, UG2-CND and Pranav Agrawal, UG2-CSE topped all the rounds of the competition and finished with a perfect score in the final round.
Team Blue Bird comprising Aniket Chandekar, Anuj Malviya, Dhiraj Shanmukha, Shambhavi Ojha, Vinaya Gopi and Venkat Sai from M.Tech Product Design and Management and SERC qualified as top 20 teams globally out of 90+ teams that participated in the Student Service Design Challenge 2023, an international competition that encourages students to design services that promote both personal well-being and collective happiness.
Anis Fatema, Ph.D student working under the supervision of Dr. Aftab Hussain received the Best women-owned business pitch and Best overall pitch award at the WiSe-YP Big Idea Pitch Competition and a prize money of $400 at the IEEE Applied Sensors Conference 2023 (IEEE APSCON 2023) held at Bengaluru on 24 January.
G V Ihita, MS student in SPCRC working on IoT security for smart cities under the guidance of Dr. Sachin Chaudhari, was selected as a representative of the Indian delegation and the Generation Connect initiative to attend United Nations agency International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-D Study Group-2 meeting at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5 – 9 December 2022.
